US Strikes Iran Nuclear Sites Amid Escalating Regional Tensions; India Calls for De-escalation

In a significant escalation of Middle East tensions, the United States military has directly joined Israel’s air campaign targeting Iran, launching strikes on three key Iranian nuclear facilities. The coordinated action, which saw U.S. forces hit sites at Fordow, Natanz, and Esfahan, marks a pivotal moment in the ongoing conflict, explicitly aimed at weakening Iran’s nuclear program.

U.S. Confirms Strikes on Nuclear Facilities

U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed the American military action on Saturday, June 21, 2025. In an announcement, President Trump stated that the attacks were successful, highlighting that a full payload of bombs was dropped on the primary target, the Fordow facility.

This direct American intervention follows over a week of intense aerial bombardment by Israel. Israeli strikes have systematically targeted various Iranian military and strategic assets, including air defenses, missile capabilities, and nuclear enrichment facilities across Iran.

The decision by the United States to engage directly in offensive operations against Iran’s nuclear infrastructure signals a deepening commitment alongside Israel and raises concerns about the potential for a wider regional conflict.

Iran’s Reaction and Retaliation

The strikes drew swift and sharp condemnation from Tehran. Iran’s Foreign Minister reportedly described the attacks as “outrageous” and issued a stern warning of “everlasting consequences” in response to the U.S. and Israeli actions.

Despite the severity of the targets, Iranian state media reported that the facilities did not suffer serious damage from the strikes. These reports, however, could not be independently verified and contrast with the U.S. assessment of the operation’s success, particularly regarding the Fordow site.

Concurrently with reacting to the U.S. strikes, Iran has continued its own offensive operations against Israel. On Sunday morning, June 22, 2025, Iranian projectiles struck targets within Israel, with at least three impacts reported in areas including Tel Aviv.

These Iranian strikes resulted in casualties and significant property destruction. According to reports, at least 23 people were injured, and heavy damage was inflicted on buildings in the Ramat Aviv area of Tel Aviv, underscoring the continuous cycle of violence and retaliation between the two nations.

International Response and Calls for Calm

The rapidly escalating situation has drawn urgent calls for de-escalation from international leaders. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian just hours after the U.S. strikes were announced. During their conversation, Prime Minister Modi emphasized the need for “immediate de-escalation” to prevent the conflict from spiraling further out of control.

The intervention by the United States directly into the hostilities, particularly by targeting sensitive nuclear sites, represents a significant shift in the regional dynamic and poses complex challenges for international diplomacy efforts aimed at restoring stability.

World powers are closely monitoring the volatile situation, weighing the implications of direct U.S. involvement and the potential for an intensified response from Iran, which could have profound consequences for the broader Middle East and global security.
