Trump Lands in Israel Amidst Hostage Releases, Declares Gaza War “Over”

TEL AVIV, Israel – U.S. President Donald Trump arrived in Israel on Monday, October 13, 2025, to a scene of guarded celebration as the first seven Israeli hostages, held by Hamas for over two years, were released and transferred to the custody of the Red Cross and subsequently to Israeli forces. Trump, who has been a key figure in brokering the current ceasefire and hostage exchange deal, declared upon his departure that the war in Gaza was “over.”

Trump’s visit marks a significant moment in the ongoing conflict, intended to celebrate the initial phase of a U.S.-brokered agreement aimed at de-escalating the situation and paving the way for regional peace. The President is scheduled to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and address the Knesset, Israel’s parliament, before departing for Egypt to co-host a peace summit in Sharm El-Sheikh with President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi.

The released hostages, identified by the Israeli Prime Minister’s office as Alon Ohel, Matan Angrest, Gali Berman, Ziv Berman, Guy Gilboa-Dalal, Eitan Abraham Mor, and Omri Miran, were handed over to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Gaza early Monday. The ICRC then transferred them to Israeli military personnel. This marked a critical step in the comprehensive deal negotiated by the U.S., which aims for the release of all 20 living hostages held by Hamas in exchange for approximately 2,000 Palestinian prisoners. The bodies of 28 other Israeli hostages are also expected to be handed over.

News of the hostages’ release sparked scenes of jubilation and profound relief across Israel. In Tel Aviv’s Hostages Square, a central gathering point for families and supporters throughout the prolonged captivity, thousands cheered, sang, and waved Israeli and U.S. flags. Families of the freed hostages expressed overwhelming emotion, with many calling it a victory for the entire nation.

A U.S.-Brokered Peace Framework

The ceasefire and hostage deal is based on a 20-point peace plan developed by the Trump administration, which aims to end the devastating war that began with Hamas’s October 7, 2023, attacks on Israel. The conflict, which has lasted over two years, has resulted in significant loss of life and widespread destruction in Gaza, creating a severe humanitarian crisis.

President Trump’s administration, with key figures including Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and son-in-law Jared Kushner, played a pivotal role in mediating the complex negotiations between Israel and Hamas, engaging with regional partners like Qatar, Egypt, and Turkey. The deal includes not only the hostage-prisoner exchange but also provisions for a surge of humanitarian aid into Gaza and a partial withdrawal of Israeli forces.

National Recognition and Regional Aspirations

In recognition of his efforts, Israeli President Isaac Herzog announced that President Trump would be awarded the Israeli Presidential Medal of Honor, the country’s highest civilian award. The medal, previously awarded to figures like Barack Obama and Angela Merkel, recognizes individuals who have made exceptional contributions to Israel and humanity. President Herzog stated that Trump’s “tireless efforts” had not only helped bring hostages home but also laid the groundwork for a “new era in the Middle East built on security, cooperation, and genuine hope for a peaceful future.”

The current developments are seen as a crucial first phase in a broader plan to establish lasting peace and stability in the Middle East. The upcoming summit in Egypt is expected to bring together global leaders to discuss the post-war reconstruction of Gaza and potential pathways towards normalized relations between Israel and its Arab neighbors. While the immediate focus is on the successful implementation of the ceasefire and hostage release, significant challenges remain regarding Hamas’s disarmament, Gaza’s future governance, and the broader path to a lasting resolution.

This news marks a critical development in the long-standing Israeli-Palestinian conflict, offering a glimmer of hope for peace amidst immense challenges. The ongoing national news coverage highlights the delicate balance of diplomacy and the profound human impact of this critical national event.
