Investigators probing the catastrophic midair collision between a passenger plane and an Army helicopter over Washington that claimed 67 lives have revealed that the helicopter was operating at an altitude higher than permitted for its designated route and that its altitude readings were inaccurate.

These critical details emerged on the opening day of extensive National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) hearings, which are dedicated to uncovering the precise causes of the tragic incident. The collision occurred on January 29, 2025, involving an American Airlines flight originating from Wichita, Kansas, and a Black Hawk helicopter.

Initial Findings Point to Altitude Violations

The NTSB presented a detailed video animation during the hearing, illustrating the final moments before the devastating crash over Ronald Reagan National Airport. The animation showed that the Army helicopter had traversed above the 200 feet (61 meters) altitude limit set for its planned path along the Potomac River. This deviation is a central focus as investigators work to reconstruct the sequence of events that led to the helicopter striking the passenger jet.

The hearings, scheduled to span three days, are designed to provide a comprehensive examination of all factors contributing to the crash. The NTSB aims to shed light on the actions and protocols of both the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the U.S. Army, as well as the operational circumstances of the aircraft involved.

Focus on Aviation Authority and Army Procedures

Key to the NTSB’s investigation will be the examination of communication, air traffic control procedures, and pilot decision-making processes for both the American Airlines flight and the Army Black Hawk helicopter. Witnesses and the investigative team are expected to be questioned extensively regarding adherence to regulations and any potential contributing factors stemming from the operational oversight of either the FAA or the Army.

The NTSB’s methodical approach aims to identify not only immediate causes but also any systemic issues that may have played a role. The goal is to provide thorough recommendations to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

The findings regarding the helicopter’s flight path and inaccurate altitude readings represent a significant development in the ongoing investigation. The NTSB continues its intensive review, with further testimony and evidence expected to be presented throughout the remaining days of the hearing to piece together the full picture of this devastating accident.
