Texas Flood Disaster: Death Toll Climbs to 78 Amid Desperate Search for Missing, Including 10 Girls

Central Texas is reeling from catastrophic flash flooding that has claimed at least 78 lives, officials confirmed Monday, July 7, 2025, as rescue crews continue to navigate widespread devastation. The updated death toll reflects the somber discovery of additional bodies in the aftermath of torrents that struck the region just days ago. The tragedy is compounded by the significant number of individuals who remain unaccounted for, fueling desperate search efforts.

Among the missing are ten young girls from a summer camp, reportedly swept away when floodwaters engulfed the facility. Their disappearance underscores the profound human toll of the disaster, leaving families and communities in anguish as hopes dim with each passing hour.

The Onset of the Catastrophe

The severe flooding began with shocking speed and intensity before daybreak on Friday, July 4th. Residents were caught off guard as the Guadalupe River, a vital waterway in the region, experienced an unprecedented surge. Water levels rose by a staggering 26 feet in just 45 minutes, a rapid escalation that offered little time for escape. The force of the surging water proved overwhelming, washing away homes and vehicles, transforming familiar landscapes into scenes of destruction and debris.

The sheer velocity and volume of the floodwaters highlight the extreme nature of the weather event. The suddenness of the rise on the Guadalupe River is a key factor in the high number of casualties and missing persons, demonstrating the limited window residents had to react to the imminent danger.

Search and Recovery Operations Intensify

Rescue and recovery operations have been ongoing since the floodwaters began to recede in some areas. Teams are meticulously searching damaged properties, riverbanks, and debris fields for survivors or victims. The difficult conditions, including remaining high water in some areas and treacherous terrain, pose significant challenges to the searchers.

Kerr County Sheriff Larry Leitha, whose jurisdiction is among the hardest hit, has been at the forefront of coordinating local response efforts. Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick has also commented on the situation, acknowledging the scale of the disaster and the complexities of the ongoing search missions. Authorities are utilizing every available resource, including helicopters, boats, and ground crews, to cover the affected areas as comprehensively as possible.

“We are working tirelessly,” Sheriff Leitha stated regarding the search, “but the conditions are difficult, and the area of impact is vast. Our priority remains finding those who are still missing.”

Official Response and Declarations

In response to the escalating crisis, Texas Governor Greg Abbott moved swiftly to declare a state of emergency in multiple counties affected by the flooding. This declaration mobilizes state resources and allows for greater flexibility in deploying aid to the impacted areas.

Further recognizing the severity of the situation, President Trump declared a major disaster for Kerr County. This crucial declaration activates federal assistance programs, opening the door for aid from agencies like the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to support recovery efforts, including assistance for affected individuals and communities. The federal declaration is a vital step in providing necessary resources for rebuilding and helping residents cope with the extensive losses.

Lingering Threats and Outlook

Despite the grim focus on search and recovery, weather patterns continue to pose a risk. Flash flood watches remained in effect for parts of the region on Monday morning, serving as a stark reminder of the ongoing potential for dangerous conditions. Authorities continue to monitor river levels and weather forecasts closely, urging residents in vulnerable areas to remain vigilant and prepared to take action if conditions worsen.

The path to recovery for central Texas will be long and challenging. The immediate focus remains on finding the missing and supporting the families of those who perished. The scale of property destruction necessitates significant rebuilding efforts, while communities grapple with the emotional trauma inflicted by the swift and devastating floodwaters.
