World News Today: Gaza Peace Plan Unveiled Amidst Escalating Global Tensions, Tech Talent Shifts, and High-Profile Revelations

September 28, 2025 — The global stage is abuzz with critical developments across multiple fronts, as a comprehensive US-led peace plan for Gaza takes center stage, juxtaposed against escalating geopolitical tensions between Russia and NATO, and significant revelations emerging from the Jeffrey Epstein case. International financial and immigration landscapes are also shifting, with Canada making strategic moves to attract tech talent while Iran faces renewed UN sanctions.

US Unveils Ambitious 21-Point Gaza Peace Plan

The most closely watched development today is the unveiling of a detailed 21-point US peace proposal aimed at resolving the protracted conflict in Gaza. Spearheaded by US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, the plan, presented to leaders of Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Egypt during UN General Assembly meetings, offers a roadmap for an immediate cessation of hostilities and a pathway toward a future Palestinian state. The core tenets include the immediate return of all hostages, both living and deceased, within 48 hours of an agreement, and the disarmament of Hamas. The proposal mandates the destruction of all Hamas offensive weaponry, with amnesty offered to militants who commit to peaceful coexistence. Hamas members choosing to leave Gaza would be granted safe passage to other nations.

A significant aspect of the plan involves the redevelopment of Gaza into a “de-radicalized, terror-free zone” for the benefit of its people. Security in the Strip would be overseen by a temporary international stabilization force, developed in conjunction with Arab and international partners, which would also train a Palestinian police force for long-term internal security. The plan stipulates that Israel will not occupy or annex Gaza, and its forces will gradually withdraw as replacement security forces establish control. Governance would be managed by a transitional government of Palestinian technocrats, supervised by a new international body, until the Palestinian Authority completes its reform program and is deemed capable of taking over. This marks the first mention of the Ramallah-based Palestinian Authority in a US peace proposal for Gaza.

While US officials expressed confidence in a potential breakthrough, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reiterated his vow to continue the war until Hamas is destroyed and voiced opposition to a Palestinian state. Hamas, meanwhile, had not yet received a copy of the plan.

Global security concerns are amplified by rising tensions between Russia and NATO. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, addressing the 80th UN General Assembly, insisted that Moscow has no intention of attacking NATO or EU member states but issued a stern warning of a “decisive response” to any aggression directed at Russia. This declaration comes amidst a backdrop of recent airspace violations, including Russian fighter jets entering Estonian airspace and Russian drones crossing into Polish territory, prompting NATO to scramble interceptors and bolster its posture along the Eastern flank.

Meanwhile, Iran has recalled its ambassadors from the United Kingdom, France, and Germany in protest after the three European powers activated the UN sanctions “snapback” mechanism. This move reinstates UN sanctions on Iran’s nuclear program, which are set to take effect at midnight GMT today, September 28, 2025. Russia and China failed to block the reimposition of sanctions at the UN Security Council. The sanctions, which target Iran’s banking and oil sectors, were triggered after Iran reversed steps taken following US and Israeli strikes on its nuclear facilities in June. Iran’s currency has reacted sharply, falling to record lows.

Epstein Files Reveal New Connections; Controversial Statue Removed

New batches of documents released from the Jeffrey Epstein estate have put several high-profile figures under renewed scrutiny. Democrats on the House Oversight Committee revealed records, including flight logs and schedules, that mention tech billionaire Elon Musk, with a tentative entry for a visit to Epstein’s private island in December 2014. Musk has publicly denied any such visit, stating he refused to go. Other prominent individuals named in the documents include Bill Gates, Peter Thiel, Steve Bannon, and Prince Andrew, who is listed as a passenger on Epstein’s jet.

Adding a surreal dimension to the ongoing revelations, a bronze-painted statue depicting President Donald Trump and Jeffrey Epstein holding hands, titled “Best Friends Forever,” appeared on the National Mall in Washington D.C. on September 23rd. The installation, claimed by a group called “The Secret Handshake,” was removed by the National Park Service early on September 25th, reportedly due to non-compliance with permit conditions. The statue’s appearance and rapid removal have sparked debate about artistic expression and political commentary.

Canada Courts Global Tech Talent Amidst US Visa Hikes

In response to the US administration’s recent implementation of a steep $100,000 fee on new H-1B visa applications, Canada has announced a strategic initiative to attract skilled technology workers. Prime Minister Mark Carney revealed plans for new immigration programs designed to draw international tech professionals who may now find US employment routes more challenging. The move positions Canada as a stable and cost-effective alternative, aiming to bolster its growing tech hubs. This policy shift could significantly reshape the global competition for specialized IT expertise.

Nepal’s Former PM Denies Wrongdoing in ‘Gen-Z’ Protests

In Nepal, former Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli has broken his silence following the violent ‘Gen-Z’ protests that led to his ouster. Oli denied that his government ordered the crackdown that resulted in numerous deaths, attributing the escalation to “infiltrators” who mingled with peaceful demonstrators. He stated that bullets were fired from automatic weapons not possessed by police and called for a thorough investigation into the tragic events of September 8th and 9th. The protests, initially sparked by anti-corruption sentiment and a social media ban, saw widespread unrest and significant casualties.

World Heart Day Nears Amidst Persistent Health Crisis

As World Heart Day approaches on September 29th, the World Health Organization (WHO) continues to highlight a persistent global heart health crisis. Cardiovascular diseases remain the leading cause of premature death worldwide, responsible for millions of lives lost annually. The WHO stresses that a vast majority of these cases are preventable through lifestyle changes and accessible healthcare, urging governments to prioritize heart health and expand screening and treatment programs. This year’s theme, “Don’t Miss a Beat,” underscores the urgency of collective action.

Sports Update: India Triumphs in Cricket Warm-up

In the realm of sports, the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025 warm-up matches saw India secure a commanding four-wicket victory over New Zealand (DLS method) on September 27th. Captain Harmanpreet Kaur’s resilient half-century anchored India’s chase, concluding their preparations ahead of their tournament opener against Sri Lanka on September 30th.
