Jimmy Kimmel Returns to Air, Accuses Trump of Celebrating Job Losses Amidst Affiliate Blackout and Free Speech Debate

Late-night host Jimmy Kimmel made his highly anticipated return to “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, following a six-day suspension that ignited a national conversation about free speech and political pressure on media. Upon his return, Kimmel wasted no time in directly addressing President Donald Trump, accusing him of celebrating Americans losing their livelihoods and actively seeking the termination of other late-night television hosts.

Suspension and the Spark of Controversy

Kimmel’s show was indefinitely suspended by ABC and its parent company, The Walt Disney Company, on September 17, 2025. The network cited comments made by Kimmel in his September 15 monologue, which were deemed “ill-timed and thus insensitive” during a tense national moment. The controversy stemmed from Kimmel’s remarks about the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk and his criticism of President Trump and his “MAGA Gang” supporters for their alleged attempts to politically capitalize on the tragedy.

Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Brendan Carr, a Trump appointee, played a significant role by publicly criticizing Kimmel’s remarks as “truly sick” and threatening potential regulatory action, including license revocation, against ABC and its affiliates if disciplinary measures were not taken. This intervention was seen by critics as governmental “jawboning” and an assault on free speech.

Kimmel’s Return and Direct Confrontation

During his first monologue back on air, Kimmel, visibly emotional at times, addressed the suspension directly. He stated that the government should not be allowed to control what is said on television, calling such actions “anti-American”. Turning his attention to President Trump, Kimmel asserted that the President “celebrates Americans losing their livelihoods because he can’t take a joke”. He further accused Trump of wanting him and hundreds of others who work on the show to be fired, and of rooting for NBC to dismiss hosts Jimmy Fallon and Seth Meyers. Kimmel also referenced Stephen Colbert’s past show cancellation, suggesting Trump’s involvement.

Trump’s Retaliation and Broader Attacks

President Trump, a frequent critic of late-night television, did not hold back his response. He celebrated Kimmel’s initial suspension, calling it “great news for America” and labeling Kimmel “Democrat garbage” with “ZERO talent” and poor ratings. Upon Kimmel’s return, Trump took to his Truth Social platform to criticize ABC, stating he “can’t believe ABC Fake News gave Jimmy Kimmel his job back” and threatened to “test” the network. He also reiterated his attacks on Jimmy Fallon and Seth Meyers, referring to them as “total losers”.

Affiliate Blackout Affects National Audience

Adding another layer to the controversy, two of the largest owners of ABC affiliate stations in the USA, Nexstar Media Group and Sinclair Broadcast Group, announced they would continue to preempt “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” even after ABC reinstated it. These companies, which collectively control approximately 23% of ABC affiliates, refused to air the show on dozens of their stations across the country. Sinclair cited “problematic comments” and “offensive and insensitive” remarks, and had previously demanded Kimmel apologize, make a donation to Kirk’s family, and meet with their representatives. This decision meant that a significant portion of the national audience could not access Kimmel’s program on their local ABC channels, leading to further discussion about the power of broadcast affiliates in the modern media landscape.

Implications and the Fight for Free Speech

The entire saga brought into sharp focus the ongoing tensions between the Trump administration and perceived critics in the entertainment industry. Late-night hosts and industry figures rallied around Kimmel, decrying the suspension as an attack on free speech. The events highlighted the delicate balance between network decisions, affiliate autonomy, and the broader implications for political discourse and freedom of expression in the USA. As “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” returns to the airwaves, the debate over censorship, political influence, and the role of late-night comedy in national news continues to resonate.
