The World Health Organization (WHO) expresses deep regret. The United States has formally withdrawn from the global health body. This decision makes both America and the world less safe. It is a significant development trending worldwide. This exit marks a major shift in global health cooperation. The WHO acknowledges US contributions. America is a founding member. It helped eradicate smallpox. It aided progress against many diseases. However, the US cited WHO failures. These involved the COVID-19 pandemic. The US claimed information was mishandled. It also mentioned WHO’s response time. Allegations of a politicized agenda surfaced. The WHO refutes these claims. It states it acts impartially. It serves all 194 member states. A Contentious Departure

The United States officially exited the WHO on January 22, 2026. This followed a one-year notice period. President Trump initiated this withdrawal. He signed an executive order on January 20, 2025. The previous administration had reversed this move. This new order reinstated the exit. The US government stopped funding the WHO. It recalled all its personnel. Engagements with the WHO were suspended. This American withdrawal impacts global health. Experts call it a “billion-dollar-foolish move.” It creates a significant funding gap. The US was the WHO’s largest donor. Its contributions were vital for many programs.

Financial Disputes Cloud Exit

Financial obligations remain a key issue. The WHO states the US must pay dues. This is required for a complete withdrawal. The US owes approximately $260.6 million. This covers dues for 2024 and 2025. An angry statement from US officials followed. They accused the WHO of holding the US flag hostage. They claim the agency has not approved their withdrawal. The WHO views this as a legal matter. It will be discussed by member states. The WHO Executive Board meets soon. The World Health Assembly will also meet. These meetings are scheduled for February and May 2026.

Global Health Implications

The US exit has far-reaching consequences. Low- and middle-income countries rely on WHO support. They depend on guidance and financial aid. Reduced resources will hurt health programs. Disease surveillance may weaken. Pandemic preparedness could suffer. This impacts vulnerable populations globally. It creates uncertainty for future health crises. The US withdrawal also affects negotiations. Talks on a WHO Pandemic Agreement stalled. The US ceased participation in these discussions. They will not be bound by the new pact.
