Washington, D.C. – The Washington Post is undertaking a significant restructuring of its newsroom operations, designed to sharpen its focus on digital delivery and broaden the scope of its journalistic endeavors. Executive Editor Matt Murray announced the creation of three new departments and their respective leaders on April 24, 2025.

These strategic changes, set to take effect on May 1, 2025, aim to better position The Post to cover the complex forces shaping the modern world and deepen its coverage of politics, government, and national life across the United States.

Strategic Reorganization for a Digital Future

Matt Murray’s announcement detailed a comprehensive plan to reorganize key coverage areas into more cohesive and forward-looking departments. The move signals a commitment to adapting traditional newsroom structures to the demands of the digital age and the evolving information needs of readers.

“These changes are essential to improving our digital focus and widening the scope of our journalism,” Murray stated, emphasizing the strategic importance of the new structure in navigating the contemporary media landscape.

A cornerstone of the reorganization is the formation of a new department dedicated to covering the pivotal forces shaping the future. This innovative unit will integrate coverage of technology, business, climate, and health/science – areas increasingly intertwined in their impact on global society.

Zach Goldfarb has been appointed to lead this crucial new department. Goldfarb will oversee a team tasked with analyzing the trends, innovations, and challenges at the intersection of these critical fields, providing readers with essential context and insight into the drivers of change.

Enhanced Focus on Politics and Government

The Washington Post is reinforcing its commitment to in-depth political and governmental reporting with the establishment of a dedicated Politics and Government department. This unit will serve as the central hub for coverage of policy, power dynamics, and the actions of politicians across the breadth of the U.S. political landscape.

Lori Montgomery will assume leadership of this vital new department. Montgomery brings extensive experience to the role, having led The Post’s Business desk since 2021. Her background also includes a distinguished tenure as deputy national editor, where she oversaw teams responsible for award-winning journalism, including work contributing to a Pulitzer Prize-winning project. In her new capacity, Montgomery will focus on delivering penetrating reporting and analysis on the intricate workings of American politics and governance.

Deepening National Coverage

Recognizing the importance of comprehensive coverage beyond the Beltway, The Washington Post is also launching a new National department. This department is charged with expanding and deepening the newspaper’s coverage of all regions of the United States.

Jennifer Amur will head the new National department. Amur’s mandate is to ensure The Post provides robust reporting on the diverse issues, significant trends, and influential personalities that shape national life across the country, offering readers a more complete picture of America.

Leadership Structure and Reporting Lines

The leaders of all three newly established departments – Zach Goldfarb for the integrated future forces unit, Lori Montgomery for Politics and Government, and Jennifer Amur for the National department – will report directly to Peter Spiegel.

This reporting structure underscores the strategic importance placed on these areas within The Post’s overall journalistic mission and leadership hierarchy.

Looking Ahead

The changes announced by Executive Editor Matt Murray on April 24, 2025, represent a significant evolution in The Washington Post’s newsroom structure. By creating these focused departments under experienced leadership, effective May 1, 2025, the newspaper aims to enhance its digital presence, broaden the scope and depth of its reporting, and continue its tradition of impactful journalism in an increasingly complex world.
