Deadly Strike Hits Gaza School Sheltering Displaced Amid Rising Toll

Gaza City – An Israeli strike triggered a fire at a school sheltering displaced Palestinians in Gaza City on Monday, resulting in the deaths of at least 10 individuals, including a child. The incident contributes to a grim tally of casualties in the ongoing conflict, with at least 24 Palestinians reported killed by Israeli airstrikes across Gaza since dawn.

The strike underscores the perilous conditions faced by civilians attempting to find refuge in facilities designated as shelters amidst intensive aerial bombardment. Schools and other public buildings have become havens for those displaced by the fighting, although their safety remains uncertain.

Civilian Toll Rises

The deaths at the school add to a growing number of fatalities reported throughout the Gaza Strip. According to figures released by Gaza’s Health Ministry, the total number of Palestinians killed by Israeli airstrikes since the early hours of Monday has reached at least 24. The rising death toll highlights the severe impact of the military operations on the civilian population.

The specific circumstances of the strike on the school, including the type of munition used and the precise target, were not immediately clear. Israeli authorities typically state they target militant infrastructure and personnel, but civilian casualties often occur in densely populated areas.

Humanitarian Operations Impaired

The humanitarian crisis in Gaza has been further exacerbated by damage to critical infrastructure and equipment vital for relief efforts. Civil defense workers operating in northern Gaza reported a significant blow to their capacity to respond to emergencies.

According to their accounts, Israeli warplanes destroyed nine bulldozers during recent strikes in the northern part of the territory. These heavy machines are indispensable for a range of humanitarian operations, particularly in areas heavily damaged by bombardments.

Khalil Nasser, a civil defense official, commented on the severity of this loss, stating the bulldozers were crucial for clearing streets choked with rubble and for retrieving bodies from collapsed buildings. The destruction of these assets directly impedes efforts to provide aid, clear access routes, and conduct search and rescue or recovery missions.

Health Crisis Deepens

Compounding the humanitarian challenges is a looming public health crisis. Gaza’s Health Ministry has issued a stark warning regarding the implications of the comprehensive blockade on the entry of essential medical supplies.

The Ministry stated that the total blockade has effectively halted the access of polio vaccines into the territory. This disruption poses a severe threat to public health, particularly concerning vulnerable populations.

According to the Ministry’s figures, over 600,000 Palestinian children are now endangered due to the lack of access to these critical immunizations. The potential resurgence or spread of vaccine-preventable diseases like polio adds another layer of complexity and urgency to the humanitarian situation on the ground.

Context of Ongoing Conflict

The strikes and the reported damage to humanitarian assets occur within the broader context of sustained military conflict in the Gaza Strip. Israeli forces have been conducting extensive operations targeting Hamas infrastructure and capabilities, while Palestinian militant groups continue to fire rockets into Israel. The intensity of the fighting has led to widespread destruction and a severe humanitarian crisis for the civilian population in Gaza.

International organizations have repeatedly expressed concern over the safety of civilians and the urgent need for humanitarian access to the besieged territory. The incident at the school is likely to intensify calls for greater protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure, including shelters.

The destruction of humanitarian equipment also raises questions about adherence to international humanitarian law, which requires parties to a conflict to distinguish between civilian objects and military objectives, and to take precautions to avoid incidental loss of civilian life, injury to civilians, and damage to civilian objects.

The situation in Gaza remains fluid, with ongoing airstrikes and ground operations reported in various areas, continuing to pose significant risks to the civilian population and challenging humanitarian relief efforts.
