Authorities have intensified their search for the individual responsible for the assassination of Charlie Kirk, a prominent American conservative activist and co-founder of Turning Point USA. The FBI and Utah law enforcement released new video footage and images of a “person of interest” on Thursday, appealing to the public for assistance in identifying the shooter who remains at large.

Charlie Kirk, a vocal ally of former President Donald Trump and a significant figure in conservative youth outreach, was fatally shot on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, during an outdoor “Prove Me Wrong” debate at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah. The event, part of Kirk’s “American Comeback Tour,” drew thousands of attendees. Witnesses reported that Kirk was speaking about gun violence shortly before a single shot was fired from a rooftop, striking him in the neck. The attack was described by Utah Governor Spencer Cox as a “political assassination.”

Unfolding Investigation and Suspect Description

The shooter, believed to be a young male appearing college-aged, executed a planned escape. Investigators have tracked the suspect’s movements, revealing that the individual ascended to the roof of a building near the debate area before firing the fatal shot. Following the incident, the suspect was seen on video descending from the roof, crossing a street, and disappearing into a wooded area. Authorities have recovered a high-powered bolt-action rifle, believed to be the weapon used in the assassination, from this wooded area. Forensic evidence collected from the rooftop includes palm prints and shoe impressions that appear to match Converse tennis shoes, described as having white soles. Officials are seeking a person seen wearing dark clothing, a baseball cap, and a black backpack.

Public Appeal and Significant Reward

The FBI has announced a reward of up to $100,000 for information leading to the identification and arrest of the individual(s) responsible for Kirk’s murder. Law enforcement agencies have been inundated with tips, reportedly receiving over 7,000, the largest volume of digital media tips submitted to the FBI since the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing. Despite this influx of information, no suspect has been publicly identified, and the motive for the killing remains under investigation. Officials have stated that while two individuals were initially taken into custody, they were released after being found not to be connected to the shooting.

Broader Political Climate

Kirk’s killing has amplified concerns about the rising tide of political violence in the United States. Figures across the political spectrum, including President Trump, have condemned the attack. Trump, who has been a close associate of Kirk and Turning Point USA, blamed the “radical left” for the violence, while also urging his supporters to remain nonviolent. The incident underscores the deep divisions and heightened tensions within American politics, drawing parallels to other recent acts of politically motivated violence.

Pursuit of Justice

Utah authorities have indicated their intention to pursue the death penalty in the case once a suspect is apprehended. The investigation is a joint effort involving state and federal law enforcement agencies, with the FBI taking the lead. The public’s assistance is deemed critical as the manhunt continues, with officials urging anyone with information, photos, or video footage to come forward. The determination to apprehend the shooter and bring them to justice remains paramount, reflecting the gravity of the event within the current political news landscape.
