In a significant shift reshaping the global technology landscape, a new study by the AI Workforce Consortium reveals that a commanding 78% of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) roles across G7 countries now incorporate AI technical skills. The findings underscore the pervasive integration of artificial intelligence into the daily operations and strategic development within the tech sector, with 7 of the 10 fastest-growing ICT roles being AI-related. This evolution, detailed in the Consortium’s latest report, “ICT in Motion: The Next Wave of AI Integration,” highlights a dual imperative: mastering new technical proficiencies while simultaneously elevating crucial human skills for ethical and effective technology deployment.

AI Agents: The New Frontier of Cyber Threats as Hackers Exploit Autonomous Systems

November 11, 2025

The comprehensive analysis, drawing on extensive job posting data from July 2024 to June 2025, examined 50 ICT and specialized support roles across nations including Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The results paint a clear picture of an industry where AI is no longer an emergent technology but a foundational requirement. The surge in demand for AI-specific expertise is evident, with roles such as AI/ML Engineer, AI Risk & Governance Specialist, and NLP Engineer leading the growth in the technology job market. Specific technical skill areas have seen exponential increases in demand, with AI security up by 298%, foundation model adaptation by 267%, and responsible AI by 256%.

Critical Skill Gaps Emerge Amidst AI Pervasiveness

Despite the widespread integration of AI, the report identifies critical skills gaps that pose a challenge for organizations aiming to leverage artificial intelligence fully and responsibly. Areas such as generative AI, large language models (LLMs), prompt engineering, and AI ethics exhibit significant deficits. Furthermore, the demand for specialized skills like AI governance has surged by 150%, and AI ethics by 125%, signaling a pressing need for professionals adept at navigating the complex intersection of technology, law, and ethics. This creates an urgent necessity for targeted upskilling and reskilling initiatives to bridge these emerging divides.

The Ascendancy of Human Skills in an AI-Driven World

As the technical demands of AI grow, the AI Workforce Consortium emphasizes that human skills are becoming increasingly vital for the responsible adoption and management of this powerful technology. Qualities such as communication, collaboration, and leadership are now prioritized, ensuring that AI is implemented not just efficiently, but also ethically and with a human-centric approach. This balancing act between technical AI proficiency and indispensable human abilities is key to fostering innovation while mitigating potential risks.

Industry Leaders Unite for Workforce Transformation

The AI Workforce Consortium, a private sector collaboration led by Cisco, brings together major industry giants including Accenture, Cornerstone, Eightfold AI, Google, IBM, Indeed, Intel, Microsoft, and SAP. This alliance was catalyzed by the U.S.-EU Trade and Technology Council’s Talent for Growth Task Force and aims to provide actionable insights into AI’s impact on ICT jobs and identify pathways for workforce development. The consortium’s mission extends to supporting businesses and workers in adapting to AI-enabled environments.

Initiatives to Bridge the Skills Divide

To address the evolving needs of the workforce, the Consortium has launched several key initiatives. These include an AI Workforce Playbook, designed to guide organizations in aligning their development strategies with business and AI objectives, and updated learning recommendations featuring over 200 curated courses. A comprehensive AI Skills Glossary has also been introduced to standardize AI terminology and skills across educational institutions, industries, and policy-making bodies. Collectively, Consortium members have committed to upskilling and reskilling 95 million individuals worldwide over the next decade, aiming to equip a vast global population for the future of work.

Broader Implications and Future Outlook

The findings suggest a profound transformation is underway, with 92% of ICT jobs expected to undergo significant change due to AI advancements. While tech hubs like Silicon Valley are experiencing substantial growth in AI-related employment, the implications are global. The trend underscores the necessity for continuous learning and adaptability for professionals across all levels, from entry-level to mid-career. As AI continues its rapid integration, the symbiotic relationship between advanced technical AI skills and essential human capabilities will define success in the evolving technology sector.
