Texas ICE Detention Center Ambush: 10 Charged with Attempted Murder of Federal Officers

ALVARADO, Texas – Federal prosecutors in Texas have announced charges against ten individuals in connection with an alleged “ambush” targeting law enforcement officers outside an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention facility late last week. The incident, which occurred at the Prairieland Detention Center in Alvarado, Texas, resulted in an Alvarado police officer sustaining a gunshot wound.

The charges were formally announced on Monday, July 8, during a press conference held by federal officials.

Acting U.S. Attorney Nancy Larson for the Northern District of Texas detailed the serious nature of the accusations. According to prosecutors, the ten individuals are each charged with three counts of attempted murder of a federal officer and three counts of discharging a firearm in relation to a crime of violence. These charges carry significant penalties, with each count of discharging a firearm in relation to a crime of violence mandating a minimum sentence of 10 years upon conviction, potentially leading to a sentence of up to life in prison if found guilty.

Details of the Alleged Ambush

The incident took place shortly before 11 p.m. Central Daylight Time (CDT) on Friday night, outside the Prairieland Detention Center. Authorities allege that the suspects conspired to create a disturbance outside the facility. The purported goal of this planned disruption was to lure ICE personnel and other law enforcement officers providing security outside the center into a vulnerable position.

Once officers responded to the manufactured disturbance, prosecutors contend the suspects intended to open fire on them. During the exchange of gunfire that ensued, an Alvarado police officer, who was among the responding personnel, was shot in the neck. The officer’s condition was not immediately detailed in the press conference, but the charging documents underscore the severe potential outcome of the alleged attack.

Federal law defines attempted murder of a federal officer as a grave offense, reflecting the protected status of those acting in an official capacity. The additional charge of discharging a firearm in relation to a crime of violence further escalates the potential punishment, highlighting the use of deadly force in the commission of the alleged crime.

Additional Charge and Investigation

Beyond the ten individuals directly charged with attempted murder and firearms offenses, an eleventh suspect has also been charged in connection with the incident. This individual faces charges of obstruction of justice and conspiracy.

Prosecutors allege that this eleventh suspect attempted to conceal and destroy evidence related to the attack following the event. The charge of obstruction of justice underscores efforts by the government to prosecute individuals who hinder investigations into serious crimes, particularly those involving violence against law enforcement.

The ongoing investigation into the alleged ambush involves multiple law enforcement agencies, although the specific roles of each agency in the investigation were not fully detailed. The charges being brought by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Texas indicate the significant federal dimension of the case, stemming from the targeting of federal ICE personnel, even though a local police officer was the one physically wounded.

Legal Process Begins

The ten suspects charged with attempted murder and the eleventh suspect charged with obstruction and conspiracy are expected to appear in federal court to face the allegations. The legal process will involve initial appearances, detention hearings, and potentially grand jury proceedings leading to formal indictments.

The severe nature of the charges – including multiple counts of attempted murder of federal officers and mandatory minimum sentences for the firearm offenses – signifies that the government is treating this incident as a deliberate and premeditated act of violence against law enforcement.

The Prairieland Detention Center is one of many facilities across the United States used to hold individuals in immigration custody. Attacks on law enforcement officers providing security at such facilities represent a serious challenge to public safety and the rule of law. The rapid federal response and filing of charges less than 72 hours after the incident highlight the priority placed on prosecuting those who allegedly target law enforcement personnel.

The investigation remains active, and further details may emerge as the case proceeds through the federal court system. The identities of the charged individuals were not immediately released, pending court proceedings. The focus for federal prosecutors is now on presenting the evidence to secure convictions for the alleged roles in the ambush that occurred outside the Alvarado facility.
