DES MOINES, Iowa – David C. Waterman was officially sworn in as the United States Attorney for the Southern District of Iowa on October 16, 2025. Chief United States District Judge Stephanie M. Rose administered the oath of office, marking a significant moment for federal law enforcement in the region. Waterman, a native of Iowa, expressed his honor and commitment to justice and public safety for the community he calls home.

A New Chapter in Federal Prosecution

David C. Waterman’s journey to the U.S. Attorney’s office is marked by extensive legal experience and deep roots in the state. He was nominated for the position by President Trump on March 31, 2025, and subsequently confirmed by the United States Senate on October 7, 2025. This confirmation followed a robust Senate Judiciary Committee process, with bipartisan support from Iowa’s Senators Chuck Grassley and Joni Ernst, who advocated for Waterman’s nomination due to his extensive service and qualifications.

Waterman brings a wealth of experience as a seasoned litigator. He previously served as an Assistant United States Attorney (AUSA) for the Middle District of Florida, where he prosecuted federal crimes and argued appeals before the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals. His role there also involved directing federal and local law enforcement agencies in complex investigations, including those utilizing grand jury and wiretap procedures.

Prior to his federal prosecutor role, Waterman gained invaluable judicial insight by serving as a law clerk for several prominent federal judges. These included Judge Michael J. Melloy of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit, Judge John A. Jarvey of the Southern District of Iowa, and Judge Mark W. Bennett of the Northern District of Iowa. This diverse judicial clerkship experience provided him with a comprehensive understanding of the federal court system.

He is also a fifth-generation attorney, having joined the Davenport-based law firm Lane & Waterman LLP in 2020. At the firm, his practice encompassed civil litigation, white-collar criminal defense, and government regulatory matters. His professional achievements have earned him recognition in publications such as The Best Lawyers in America® and Great Plains Super Lawyers®, highlighting his expertise.

The Mission of the Southern District of Iowa U.S. Attorney’s Office

The United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Iowa plays a critical role in upholding federal law across 47 counties in the state. Its core mission is to pursue justice by effectively representing the United States in both civil and criminal litigation. The office is responsible for prosecuting federal crimes, ranging from terrorism and national security threats to public corruption, fraud, child exploitation, and human trafficking.

Beyond criminal prosecutions, the office also represents the U.S. government in civil cases, defending federal interests and collecting debts owed to the United States. It serves as a vital liaison between federal, state, and local agencies, fostering collaboration to enhance public safety and build trust in the American justice system.

Waterman’s Commitment to Justice and Public Safety

Upon his swearing-in, U.S. Attorney Waterman articulated his dedication to his new role. “Having been born and raised in the district, I am committed to upholding justice and safeguarding the community I proudly call home,” Waterman stated.

He expressed gratitude for his nomination and confirmation, acknowledging the support from President Trump and Iowa’s senators. Waterman looks forward to collaborating with federal, state, and local law enforcement partners to strengthen public safety initiatives and serve the residents of Iowa. His vision emphasizes the pursuit of truth and justice, leveraging his extensive legal background to tackle complex cases and protect the public good.

As the chief federal law enforcement officer for the Southern District of Iowa, Waterman’s appointment signifies a new era of leadership aimed at ensuring the integrity and effectiveness of federal justice within the district and across the American landscape. His predecessor, Marc Krickbaum, had resigned from the position.

The appointment of David C. Waterman as United States Attorney for the Southern District of Iowa marks a significant development in the administration of federal justice, bringing an experienced prosecutor back to public service in his home state with a clear mandate to uphold the law and protect its citizens. This news is a vital update for law enforcement and the community within the Southern District of Iowa.
