In a case that has sent shockwaves through the national political landscape, prosecutors in Utah have officially charged Tyler Robinson, 22, with aggravated murder in connection with the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. The charges were announced Tuesday, painting a grim picture of premeditation, including a note left by the suspect detailing his intent and subsequent text message confessions.

Prosecutors detailed that Robinson had allegedly planned the assassination for “a bit over a week” after learning Kirk would be speaking at Utah Valley University (UVU) in Orem, Utah. Evidence presented includes a note discovered by Robinson’s roommate, which stated, “I had the opportunity to take out Charlie Kirk and I’m going to take it”. This note was reportedly found hidden under a keyboard. Following the shooting on September 10, 2025, Robinson is accused of confessing to the act via text messages to his roommate, with whom he was in a romantic relationship. In these messages, Robinson allegedly expressed that he “had enough of his hatred” and that “some hate can’t be negotiated out”. He also reportedly instructed his roommate to delete the exchange and to remain silent if questioned by police, leading to additional charges of obstruction of justice and witness tampering.

Charges and Potential Penalty

Utah County Attorney Jeff Gray announced that Robinson faces seven felony charges, including aggravated murder, felony discharge of a firearm, two counts of obstruction of justice, two counts of witness tampering, and committing a violent offense in the presence of a child. The state intends to seek the death penalty, citing aggravating factors such as targeting Kirk for his political beliefs and committing the offense in front of witnesses, including children. Robinson appeared virtually in court, where he was informed of the charges and was appointed an attorney, as he was deemed indigent. He is being held without bail.

Victim and Broader Context

Charlie Kirk, 31, was a prominent conservative activist, author, and media personality, best known for co-founding Turning Point USA (TPUSA) in 2012. He was a significant voice in the MAGA movement and a close ally of former President Donald Trump. Kirk was shot and killed on September 10, 2025, while speaking to students at Utah Valley University as part of his “American Comeback Tour.”. His death has highlighted concerns about political violence in the USA, with many polarizing figures across the political spectrum canceling public events and re-evaluating security protocols. Experts noted that attacks on non-elected political figures, like Kirk, are unusual and that political assassinations can occur in waves, potentially encouraging further violence.

Investigation and Suspect Background

Authorities believe the rifle used in the killing was a gift from Robinson’s grandfather. DNA evidence consistent with Robinson’s was found on the trigger of the rifle and on a screwdriver recovered from the rooftop where the fatal shot was fired. While prosecutors stated they are not confirming a specific motive, Robinson’s parents noted he had become more politically active and leaned more to the left over the past year, supporting gay and trans rights, and had dated a transgender individual. The FBI is also reportedly investigating whether Robinson acted alone or as part of a broader plot, examining his online activities, including those on Discord. A different individual falsely claimed responsibility for the shooting in the immediate aftermath, but was later arrested for obstruction of justice, which temporarily diverted law enforcement resources.

Next Steps

Robinson’s next court appearance is scheduled for September 29. The case is expected to proceed to a high-profile trial, with prosecutors signaling their intent to pursue the death penalty. The tragic events underscore the volatile political climate and the ongoing debates surrounding security for public figures in the USA.
