Boston, MA – The Lown Institute, a nonpartisan healthcare think tank, has unveiled its highly anticipated list recognizing America’s most socially responsible hospitals for 2025. This year, the institute’s Honor Roll celebrates 125 acute care hospitals and 45 critical access hospitals that demonstrated exceptional performance across key indicators of community benefit and equitable care.

Utilizing its comprehensive 2025 Lown Hospitals Index, the institute evaluated a vast landscape of American healthcare institutions. The assessment encompassed over 2,700 acute care hospitals and more than 800 critical access hospitals nationwide. These evaluations were based on a robust framework of 54 performance metrics, segmented into three crucial categories: health equity, patient outcomes, and value of care.

Leading the Way in Acute Care and Health Systems

For an impressive third consecutive year, Duke Regional Hospital in Durham, North Carolina, secured the top position on the acute care hospitals list. This consistent high ranking underscores the hospital’s sustained commitment to the principles measured by the Lown Index.

Jason Carter, president and chief operating officer of Duke Regional Hospital, attributed their repeated success to foundational elements of their operation. Carter cited the hospital’s long history and its unwavering commitment to ensuring access to care as pivotal factors contributing to their consistent high ranking.

Beyond the top spot, the acute care honor roll recognized numerous other institutions for their dedication to social responsibility. Notable hospitals featured on this list include Fort Loudoun Medical Center in Lenoir City, Tennessee, and Baylor Scott & White Medical Center – Pflugerville in Pflugerville, Texas. Denver Health Main Campus in Denver also earned significant recognition, placing fourth overall on the prestigious list.

At the health system level, Nebraska Medicine was distinguished with the top spot, signifying leading performance across its network of facilities and services.

Defining Social Responsibility in Healthcare

Vikas Saini, MD, president of the Lown Institute, provided insight into the significance of the rankings. Dr. Saini emphasized that socially responsible hospitals are those committed to providing high-quality care not just to some, but to all members of their community. He articulated a hopeful vision, stating that equitable and excellent care is not an aspirational goal but a standard that can and should be achieved across the healthcare landscape.

The Lown Institute’s methodology for determining social responsibility is designed to look beyond traditional measures of clinical quality or financial performance. It seeks to identify institutions that actively work to promote health equity by serving diverse populations, achieving strong patient outcomes while controlling costs, and providing value to their communities by reinvesting in local health initiatives and ensuring fair pricing practices.

Navigating Challenges, Prioritizing Community

The institute highlighted that the hospitals recognized on the Honor Roll demonstrate that prioritizing patients and communities is achievable, even amidst the significant operational and financial challenges currently facing the healthcare sector. These challenges include persistent workforce shortages and escalating costs of care.

A notable finding from the institute’s analysis revealed that a majority of the hospitals earning a spot on the Honor Roll paid their chief executive officers below the average compensation compared to leaders at similar-sized hospitals. This observation is presented by the Lown Institute as potentially indicative of an organizational culture that prioritizes resource allocation towards patient care and community benefit over executive compensation, aligning with the core tenets of social responsibility as defined by the index.

The 2025 Lown Hospitals Index serves as a benchmark, spotlighting institutions that are successfully integrating social responsibility into their core mission and operations. By evaluating hospitals on metrics that encompass equity, outcomes, and value, the Lown Institute aims to encourage greater transparency and accountability within the healthcare industry, ultimately fostering a system that better serves the health and well-being of all Americans.
