Mamdani Declares Victory in NYC Mayoral Primary as Ranked Choice Tally Begins

New York, NY – State Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani declared victory early Wednesday morning in the hotly contested Democratic primary for New York City mayor, addressing enthusiastic supporters at his campaign headquarters in Queens on June 25, 2025.

Mamdani’s claim came as unofficial first-round results showed him leading a crowded field, though the final outcome remains subject to the city’s ranked choice voting system, as no candidate appears to have secured the outright majority required to win initially.

Preliminary Vote Tabulation

With an estimated 92% of the vote counted in the initial tabulation, unofficial results positioned Zohran Mamdani at the forefront, garnering 43.1% of the vote. His main rival in the primary, former Governor Andrew Cuomo, trailed with 34.5%. Coming in third was Brad Lander with 12.9% of the vote, according to the preliminary figures.

The substantial portion of votes counted provides a strong indication of the electorate’s preferences, but the distribution falls short of the over 50% threshold needed to avoid additional rounds of tabulation under the ranked choice system.

Addressing his supporters in Queens, the 33-year-old Assemblyman confidently stated, “I will be your Democratic nominee.” The declaration marked a pivotal moment in the primary race, positioning Mamdani as the likely frontrunner heading into the complex ranked choice count.

In a significant gesture following the initial results, former Governor Andrew Cuomo reportedly called Mamdani to congratulate him. This act signaled an acknowledgment of Mamdani’s strong performance and the apparent trajectory of the race based on the initial vote count.

The Impact of Ranked Choice Voting

The New York City Democratic primary for mayor will be officially decided by ranked choice voting. This system comes into play when no candidate secures over 50% of the initial first-choice votes, as is the case in this primary. The process involves eliminating the last-place candidate and redistributing their votes to the voters’ next ranked choice. This continues in rounds until one candidate surpasses the 50% threshold.

The preliminary results, while showing a clear lead for Mamdani, do not guarantee a victory until the full ranked choice tabulation is complete. The distribution of second, third, and subsequent choices from eliminated candidates, particularly those who voted for Brad Lander and other contenders below the top three, will be crucial in determining the final nominee.

Early Voting Trends and Turnout

Early voting, which took place from June 14 to June 22, reportedly favored Zohran Mamdani. The strong performance during this period likely contributed significantly to his leading position in the initial vote count announced on Wednesday, June 25, 2025.

Estimates from CBS News suggest that the total voter turnout for the primary will reach approximately 1.1 million voters. This figure indicates a robust engagement from the city’s Democratic electorate in selecting their candidate for the upcoming mayoral election.

The Candidate: Zohran Mamdani

Zohran Mamdani, a 33-year-old Democratic socialist and State Assemblyman representing a district in Queens, based his mayoral campaign prominently on addressing the pressing issue of lowering the cost of living in New York City. His platform resonated with voters concerned about affordability, housing costs, and economic inequality in the five boroughs.

His background as a Democratic socialist positions him among a growing progressive wing within the party, advocating for significant systemic changes to address urban challenges. His message appears to have successfully mobilized a substantial portion of the Democratic primary electorate.

Looking Ahead

While Mamdani has declared victory, the city’s Board of Elections will undertake the detailed and potentially lengthy process of ranked choice tabulation in the coming days and weeks. The unofficial results are promising for the State Assemblyman, but the final confirmation of the Democratic nominee awaits the completion of this complex counting process. The outcome will set the stage for the general election later this year, with the Democratic nominee entering as the favorite in the heavily Democratic city.
