Tampa Bay, Florida – Sixty children, identified by authorities as “critically missing” and ranging in age from nine to seventeen, have been located or recovered safely during a two-week multi-agency operation spanning Hillsborough, Pinellas, and Pasco counties in Florida. The initiative, dubbed Operation Dragon Eye, also resulted in the arrest of eight suspects.

Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier announced the successful outcomes of the concentrated effort, highlighting the collaborative nature of the operation involving a diverse coalition of law enforcement and support organizations.

A Collaborative Effort for Vulnerable Youth

Operation Dragon Eye was spearheaded by the U.S. Marshals Service and involved the participation of approximately twenty federal, state, and local agencies and organizations. This extensive network included key law enforcement partners such as the St. Petersburg Police Department, the Hillsborough Sheriff’s Office, the Pasco Sheriff’s Office, and the Pinellas Sheriff’s Office.

The operation also integrated the crucial support of various state agencies and non-governmental organizations dedicated to child welfare and victim support. These included the Department of Children and Families (DCF), Bridges of Hope, Children’s Home Network, Children’s Network of Hillsborough County, Family Support Services Pasco Pinellas Counties, More Too Life, the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, and Redefining Refuge. This broad collaboration underscores the complex nature of cases involving missing and exploited children, requiring resources and expertise beyond traditional law enforcement.

The term “critically missing,” as defined by the U.S. Marshals Service, refers to children considered to be at significant risk. This definition encompasses youths facing potential crimes of violence or those with elevated risk factors such as substance abuse, sexual exploitation, exposure to criminal activity, or domestic violence. The focus on this specific category of missing children highlights the urgency and potential dangers associated with their disappearance.

Operation Outcomes: Rescues and Arrests

The primary objective of Operation Dragon Eye was the safe location and recovery of these vulnerable youths. The successful outcome saw sixty children, previously considered critically missing within the three-county Tampa Bay area, located and brought to safety.

Parallel to the rescue efforts, the operation also targeted individuals believed to be connected to the children’s disappearances or involved in activities that placed them at risk. Eight suspects were arrested as a result of the two-week initiative. The severity of the allegations against these individuals is reflected in their bond amounts, which range significantly from no bond to as high as $250 million.

Specific results from participating agencies provided further insight into the operation’s scope. The St. Petersburg Police Department, for example, reported recovering eleven youths and arresting two suspects during their involvement in Operation Dragon Eye. One of these arrests included a charge specifically related to human trafficking, pointing to the grave threats some of these children faced.

The Importance of Multi-Agency Response

The success of operations like Dragon Eye relies heavily on seamless coordination between various levels of government and specialized support services. The U.S. Marshals Service’s lead role in fugitive apprehension and complex investigations provides a crucial federal layer, complementing the local knowledge and immediate response capabilities of county sheriff’s offices and city police departments.

The inclusion of child welfare organizations and non-profits is equally vital. These partners provide essential resources, including temporary housing, counseling, and case management, ensuring that once recovered, children receive the necessary support to begin healing and recovery. Their involvement highlights the understanding that rescuing a child is often just the first step in a long process.

Looking Ahead

The conclusion of Operation Dragon Eye marks a significant achievement in the ongoing fight against child endangerment and exploitation in the Tampa Bay region. The recovery of sixty critically missing children offers hope and demonstrates the profound impact of dedicated law enforcement and community partnerships.

While the operation successfully located these sixty youths and apprehended eight individuals, authorities emphasize that the work to protect vulnerable children is continuous. Investigations related to these cases may still be ongoing, and the welfare of the recovered children remains a top priority for the involved agencies and organizations.
