BENGALURU, India – India’s burgeoning private space sector has achieved a significant milestone with the successful launch and deployment of ‘Nila’, heralded as the nation’s first satellite designed specifically for hosting private payloads. Developed by HEX20, a small satellite manufacturing company based in Technopark, the mission represents a pivotal step in democratizing access to space for commercial and research entities.

‘Nila’ was launched on March 15, 2025, at 12:13 pm India Standard Time (IST) aboard the SpaceX Transporter-13 mission. The deployment was facilitated by Berlin-based satellite deployer company, Exolaunch. The successful separation of ‘Nila’ from the launch vehicle was confirmed less than an hour later, at 1:07 pm IST.

A Rapid Development and Critical Milestone

The development timeline for ‘Nila’ was remarkably swift, taking just four months from concept to launch readiness. Following deployment, a crucial milestone was reached on March 16 when the satellite’s beacon signal was successfully received at HEX20’s Satellite Control Center. This signal confirmed the satellite’s health and operational status in orbit, paving the way for subsequent commissioning activities.

For this inaugural mission, ‘Nila’ carried Release Actuators provided by German space company Dcubed as its primary payload. This collaborative effort underscores HEX20’s commitment to fostering international partnerships within the global space ecosystem and demonstrates the satellite platform’s capability to accommodate diverse customer payloads.

Commissioning from Kerala and Company Vision

The commissioning of ‘Nila’ – the process of testing and configuring the satellite’s systems in orbit – will be conducted remotely by the HEX20 team. Operations will be managed from the company’s newly inaugurated Ground Station, strategically located at Marian Engineering College, Menamkulam, in Kerala’s capital.

The satellite’s name, ‘Nila’, holds cultural significance, being named after the culturally important river Nila in Kerala. This choice reflects a connection to the company’s roots and the region from which it operates.

MB Aravind, Co-Founder & Director at HEX20, commented on the significance of the mission, stating that it aimed to “prove what’s possible when passion meets innovation.” This statement highlights the pioneering spirit driving the company and its contribution to advancing India’s capabilities in satellite technology and space access.

HEX20’s Capabilities and Industry Support

HEX20 specializes in building payload-agnostic satellite platforms, meaning their satellites are designed to accommodate various types of payloads without requiring significant redesign. Beyond manufacturing, the company offers comprehensive services including satellite mission as a service and dedicated payload hosting capabilities, providing end-to-end solutions for clients seeking access to space.

The successful launch of ‘Nila’ was also facilitated by the supportive regulatory environment in India, particularly the guidance and authorization provided by the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe). HEX20 expressed its gratitude for IN-SPACe’s crucial role in enabling private sector participation in space activities.

With a global footprint that includes a presence in Australia, the UAE, and Taiwan, HEX20 is positioned to serve an international clientele. The ‘Nila’ mission not only validates the company’s technical capabilities but also establishes a critical proof-of-concept for hosted payload services from India, opening new avenues for commercial utilization of low Earth orbit.

Looking Ahead

The successful deployment and initial contact with ‘Nila’ mark the beginning of its operational life. The data and experience gained from this mission will be invaluable for HEX20 as it continues to develop more advanced satellite platforms and expand its service offerings. As India’s private space sector matures, missions like ‘Nila’ underscore the growing capacity of domestic companies to contribute significantly to the global space economy and provide innovative solutions for diverse space-based applications.
