CUPERTINO, CA – Apple’s annual Worldwide Developer’s Conference (WWDC) delivered a sweeping vision for the future of its software ecosystem, unveiling the next generations of its core operating systems during a keynote address from Apple Park on June 8, 2025. The presentation introduced iOS 26, macOS 26 Tahoe, iPadOS 26, watchOS 26, tvOS 26, and visionOS 26, highlighting a unified design philosophy and significant functional upgrades across the board.

A central theme of this year’s announcements is the introduction of a new aesthetic dubbed ‘Liquid Glass.’ This design language emphasizes translucency and fluidity, intended to provide a cohesive and visually striking style that unifies the user experience across all of Apple’s platforms, from the iPhone to the Mac and beyond.

A Unified Vision: The ‘Liquid Glass’ Design

The ‘Liquid Glass’ design represents a significant visual overhaul, moving towards more dynamic and transparent interface elements. Apple stated this new look will permeate iOS 26, macOS 26 Tahoe, iPadOS 26, watchOS 26, tvOS 26, and visionOS 26, creating a distinct, modern identity for the company’s software landscape. The aim is to enhance user engagement through subtle animations and layered visual depth.

iPadOS 26: Elevating the Tablet Experience

Perhaps the most eagerly anticipated announcement for iPad users was the debut of iPadOS 26, which Apple described as the “biggest iPadOS release ever.” This update brings substantial enhancements aimed at making the iPad a more capable productivity device, particularly in the realm of multitasking. A key feature is the introduction of true windowed multitasking, allowing users greater flexibility in managing multiple applications simultaneously, mirroring the functionality found on desktop operating systems.

Further boosting the iPad’s pro capabilities, iPadOS 26 includes significant enhancements to the Files app, improving file management and integration with cloud services and external storage. Additionally, the popular Preview feature, previously limited on certain models, will now be available on all current iPad models. These changes collectively underscore Apple’s ongoing effort to evolve iPadOS and deliver a user experience that is increasingly more Mac-like while retaining its touch-first identity.

macOS 26 Tahoe and Cross-Platform Enhancements

macOS 26 Tahoe integrates the new ‘Liquid Glass’ design language, aligning the desktop experience with the broader Apple ecosystem’s visual refresh. A notable new feature for macOS users is the ability to access the iPhone’s Phone app directly from a Mac, streamlining communication workflows and enhancing continuity between devices.

A major initiative announced across multiple platforms is the introduction of a new, dedicated Games app. This forthcoming application is set to arrive on macOS, iOS, iPadOS, and tvOS. Designed to replace the existing Game Center, the new Games app will serve as a central hub for both third-party titles available on the App Store and games offered through Apple Arcade, promising a more integrated and discoverable gaming experience across Apple devices.

Expanding Apple Intelligence Capabilities

Apple Intelligence, the company’s suite of AI features, is receiving notable upgrades in the new software releases. A significant enhancement is the addition of Live Translation capabilities, which will be integrated into FaceTime, phone calls, and messages, enabling real-time language conversion during communications. This feature aims to break down language barriers and facilitate international interactions.

Furthermore, Apple Intelligence’s Visual Intelligence features are being enhanced with screen-sharing functionality. This allows users to share and interact with on-screen content in more intuitive ways, potentially benefiting collaboration, support, and content creation workflows.

Updates for Watch and TV

Apple also detailed updates for its wearable and living room platforms. tvOS 26, designed for the Apple TV 4K and the Apple TV HD (2015), features a design refresh incorporating the ‘Liquid Glass’ aesthetic. The update also brings improved profiles for personalized user experiences, an enhanced FaceTime interface optimized for the television screen, and the expansion of the popular Sing Karaoke feature.

For the Apple Watch, watchOS 26 includes an AI upgrade, building upon the intelligence features available on the wrist. New fitness tracking capabilities were announced, further enhancing the device’s health and wellness monitoring. Mirroring the iPhone updates, watchOS 26 will also gain on-device Live Translation, providing convenient language assistance directly from the watch.

Following the keynote, developer betas for iOS 26, macOS 26 Tahoe, iPadOS 26, watchOS 26, tvOS 26, and visionOS 26 were made available, allowing developers to begin adapting their applications to the new platforms and features ahead of their public release later in the year. The collective updates signal a strong push towards design unification, enhanced productivity on iPad, improved cross-device integration, expanded AI functionality, and a bolstered gaming ecosystem across Apple’s extensive range of devices.
