Rheinmetall and INERATEC Forge Energy Partnership for Defense and Critical Infrastructure with Advanced E-Fuels

DÜSSELDORF/KARLSRUHE – In a significant move aimed at bolstering energy resilience and decoupling critical operations from volatile fossil fuel markets, global technology leader Rheinmetall and German cleantech firm INERATEC announced a strategic partnership on June 16, 2025.

The collaboration centers on the deployment of scalable Power-to-Liquid (PtL) solutions across defense and critical infrastructure sectors worldwide. This initiative seeks to establish robust, independent energy systems capable of supplying essential fuel needs without reliance on traditional fossil fuel supply chains or vulnerable fixed infrastructure.

Powering Resilience: The PtL Solution

The core of the partnership involves deploying INERATEC’s advanced, modular PtL technology. These distributed plants offer the capability to produce synthetic fuels locally, ensuring a consistent and independent fuel supply for critical operations. The technology leverages renewable hydrogen and captured carbon dioxide (CO₂) to synthesize high-performance e-fuels.

These synthetic fuels, which include kerosene, diesel, and gasoline equivalents, are designed to possess the same energy density, storability, and versatility as conventional fossil fuels. Crucially, they can be used in existing vehicles, aircraft, and equipment without requiring modifications to engines or established supply chains, facilitating a seamless transition.

This initiative, referred to as Giga PtX, is envisioned as a foundational element in building a sustainable, carbon-neutral fuel network. By enabling on-site production of these advanced synthetic fuels, the partnership directly addresses the increasing vulnerability of traditional fossil fuel logistics, a concern amplified by geopolitical instability and supply chain disruptions.

Addressing Critical Fuel Needs

The partnership underscores the vital importance of uninterrupted fuel availability, particularly for military forces and critical infrastructure. Military operations, for instance, can necessitate substantial fuel consumption, often ranging between 20 and 60 liters per person each day, highlighting the absolute requirement for reliable and resilient supply lines.

The distributed nature of the modular PtL plants provides a strategic advantage, allowing for fuel production closer to the point of consumption. This reduces dependence on long, potentially vulnerable transportation routes and large, centralized storage facilities, significantly enhancing operational resilience and energy security.

Phased Deployment and Strategic Goals

The phased deployment of the PtL systems is scheduled to commence in late 2025. Rheinmetall, with its extensive experience in defense logistics and systems integration, will play a key role in incorporating these modular units into existing supply networks.

This integration is designed to achieve NATO-scale fuel resilience, providing allied forces and critical civilian infrastructure with enhanced operational autonomy. Furthermore, the initiative supports broader strategic objectives, contributing to Europe’s transition towards carbon-neutral energy sources and reducing greenhouse gas emissions associated with fuel consumption.

Leadership Perspectives

Executives from both companies highlighted the transformative potential of the partnership.

Maximilian Backhaus, Chief Commercial Officer at INERATEC, commented on the synergy between energy security and sustainability, stating, “This partnership with Rheinmetall proves that energy resilience and defossilization can go hand in hand. We see e-fuels as a strategic necessity for sectors with hard-to-abate emissions and critical operations, and we are excited to scale our technology globally through this collaboration.”

Shena Britzen, Head of the Hydrogen Program at Rheinmetall, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the strategic importance of localized fuel production. “In an era where energy autonomy is becoming as critical for operational success as advanced weapon systems, these modular PtL plants will empower forces and critical infrastructure operators to maintain independence and operational tempo, regardless of external supply chain vulnerabilities,” Britzen noted.

Conclusion

The strategic partnership between Rheinmetall and INERATEC represents a forward-looking approach to energy security and sustainability. By combining Rheinmetall’s global reach and integration expertise with INERATEC’s innovative PtL technology, the collaboration aims to provide defense organizations and critical infrastructure operators with the capability to produce their own high-performance, carbon-neutral fuels locally. This development is poised to enhance operational readiness, mitigate supply chain risks, and contribute significantly to global efforts to decarbonize hard-to-abate sectors.
