India-Pakistan Tensions Escalate: Pakistan Claims Missile Strikes on Airbases, Shuts Airspace

Islamabad claims India targeted three of its key airbases with missiles Saturday, triggering a swift response that saw Pakistan close its entire airspace to all traffic and India extending flight cancellations across dozens of airports. The dramatic developments on May 10, 2025, mark a significant intensification of already heightened tensions between the nuclear-armed neighbors.

Pakistan’s Allegations and Airspace Closure

According to statements from Islamabad, India allegedly launched missile attacks targeting three separate airbases within Pakistan. While specific details regarding the locations of these airbases or the extent of any damage were not immediately provided in the information made available, the claim itself represents a serious accusation of direct military action.

Following these reported attacks, the Pakistan Airport Authority (PAA) issued a formal notification announcing the complete closure of Pakistan’s national airspace. The PAA stated that the closure would remain in effect for all air traffic until 4 p.m. local time on May 10, 2025. This measure effectively grounded both domestic and international flights intending to use Pakistani airspace, causing widespread disruption to global air travel routes that traverse the region.

India’s Response and Aviation Impact

In reaction to the volatile situation and the airspace closure by Pakistan, India took steps to manage its own aviation safety and operational challenges. India extended the cancellation of civilian flight operations across a significant network of airports in its northern and western regions. A total of 32 airports were affected by this directive.

This extended restriction on civilian air travel is now set to continue until May 15, 2025, according to the information available. The decision impacts major flight hubs and regional airports, highlighting the logistical complexities and civilian disruption caused by the military and political standoff.

Undercurrent of Rising Hostilities: The May 8 Drone Incidents

The events of May 10 unfolded against a backdrop of increasing friction, including serious allegations regarding activity just days prior. Details have emerged concerning events on Thursday, May 8, 2025, when Pakistan allegedly attempted multiple drone intrusions along the border.

According to statements attributed to Wg Cdr Vyomika Singh, Pakistan allegedly attempted drone intrusions from the area of Leh extending down to Sir Creek. These attempts reportedly occurred at 36 distinct locations along the frontier. The scale of the alleged attempted intrusion was notable, involving an estimated 300 to 400 drones, which were reportedly of Turkish origin.

The alleged purpose of these widespread drone attempts was reportedly multifaceted: primarily to test Indian Air Defences and potentially to target the Bhatinda military station with an armed drone. These claims, attributed to Wg Cdr Vyomika Singh, underscore the technological dimension and potentially offensive nature of the recent escalations.

Broader Implications: Corridor Suspension and Civilian Disruptions

The escalating hostilities have had immediate and tangible impacts beyond the military and aviation spheres. As a direct consequence of the rising tensions, the Kartarpur Corridor has been suspended. The corridor, which facilitates visa-free travel for Sikh pilgrims between India and Pakistan, represents a significant symbol of cross-border people-to-people connection, and its closure signifies the depth of the current crisis.

The situation has also created challenges for citizens caught in the affected regions. Recognizing the difficulties faced by those stranded due to travel disruptions, the Tamil Nadu government established a dedicated help desk in Tamil Nadu House in New Delhi. This initiative aims to assist Tamils who are stranded in Jammu and Kashmir as a result of the rising hostilities in the region.

Addressing the transportation disruptions, Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw reviewed train operations on Friday, May 9, 2025. In response to the extensive cancellation of flights and closure of airports, including major transit points like Jammu and Chandigarh, Minister Vaishnaw issued instructions for special trains to be operated. These special services are intended to help ferry passengers affected by the significant disruption to air travel, providing an alternative mode of transport amidst the crisis.

The claims of missile strikes, coupled with the unprecedented airspace closure and the preceding allegations of mass drone intrusions, paint a grim picture of the escalating tensions between India and Pakistan. The situation remains fluid, with significant impacts already being felt across aviation, border access, and civilian movement in both countries.
