Nike co-founder Phil Knight and his wife, Penny Knight, have made an unprecedented $2 billion donation to the Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) Knight Cancer Institute. This landmark contribution, announced on August 14, 2025, is the largest single donation ever made to a U.S. university, college, or academic health center, aiming to fundamentally transform cancer research, diagnosis, treatment, and patient care on a national scale.

A Monumental Investment in the Fight Against Cancer

The $2 billion gift from the Knights represents a monumental leap forward in philanthropic support for cancer initiatives, surpassing previous records such as Michael Bloomberg’s $1.8 billion donation to Johns Hopkins University in 2018. This substantial investment is deeply rooted in the Knights’ long-standing commitment to advancing cancer research, a commitment that began over a decade ago with a $500 million pledge in 2013. That earlier challenge spurred OHSU and its supporters to raise $1 billion, establishing the Knight Cancer Institute as a pioneer in early detection and precision oncology.

Revolutionizing Cancer Care: A Unified Vision

The core objective of this transformative gift is to create a fully integrated cancer care model. This model seeks to seamlessly merge cutting-edge scientific discovery with exceptional patient care, guided by the vision of Dr. Brian Druker, Director of the OHSU Knight Cancer Institute. The funds will be utilized to accelerate diagnostics, ensure broader access to innovative clinical trials, and simplify the often overwhelming experience for patients and their families. Every patient will have access to a comprehensive suite of support services, including psychological, genetic, and financial counseling, symptom management, nutritional support, and survivorship care. The Knights expressed their excitement, stating, “We are grateful for the opportunity to invest in the next stage of the Druker-led revolutionary vision of cancer research, diagnosis, treatment, care, and some day, eradication. We couldn’t be more excited about the transformational potential of this work for humanity.”

Empowering OHSU and Advancing National Health

To effectively implement this ambitious vision, the Knight Cancer Institute will transition into a self-governed entity within OHSU, operating under a newly established Knight Cancer Group with its own board of directors. Dr. Brian Druker will serve as the inaugural president of this group, which will oversee OHSU’s cancer services. This restructuring aims to provide the institute with greater agility in decision-making, talent recruitment, and the efficient deployment of resources. OHSU President Shereef Elnahal highlighted the gift’s significance, noting it will “elevate OHSU and our entire state, give Oregonians another reason to be proud, and most importantly, provide unparalleled support to those with cancer.” Furthermore, the substantial funding is expected to bolster OHSU’s capacity to attract top-tier scientific talent from around the nation and help insulate the institute from potential fluctuations in federal research funding, a critical factor in today’s research landscape.

The donation will also fund the expansion of specialized laboratory spaces for experimental therapeutics and precision medicine, alongside upgrades to diagnostic radiology clinics equipped with advanced imaging technology. This comprehensive approach underscores a commitment not only to finding cures but also to enhancing the patient journey at every step.

A Legacy of Impact and Future Hope

Phil Knight, co-founder of Nike and a pivotal figure in American business innovation, has consistently demonstrated a profound dedication to philanthropy, particularly in advancing scientific and medical research. His previous contributions have already shaped the landscape of cancer research in Oregon and across the country. This latest, record-shattering donation solidifies his legacy as a visionary philanthropist, propelling the OHSU Knight Cancer Institute to the forefront of global cancer research. The news provides a powerful beacon of hope for millions affected by cancer, signaling a new era of accelerated breakthroughs and enhanced patient care, driven by bold vision and transformative generosity.
