NEW YORK – Fortune magazine has released its highly anticipated 2025 list of the 100 Most Powerful Women in Business, recognizing a distinguished group of female leaders from across the globe who are shaping industries and driving significant change in the corporate world.

The annual compilation features 100 prominent businesswomen representing a diverse array of sectors, including finance, technology, healthcare, telecommunications, retail, and energy. The list serves as a key indicator of the growing influence and impact of women in executive leadership roles on a global scale.

Global Representation on the List

The 2025 list underscores the international scope of female business leadership. Of the 100 women recognized, 52 hail from the United States, while a substantial 48 leaders represent various countries around the world. This balance highlights the increasing prominence of women in top positions beyond traditional economic centers.

The announcement of the list coincides with Fortune’s inaugural Most Powerful Women International conference, scheduled to take place in Riyadh on May 20-21. This event provides a significant platform for discussion, networking, and insights among leading female executives and is strategically timed to leverage the profile generated by the list’s publication.

The 2025 list includes several prominent figures from the Middle East, showcasing the impactful contributions of women in the region’s business landscape. Among these are two highly ranked individuals:

Hana Al-Rostamani, Group CEO of First Abu Dhabi Bank, is featured on the list at No. 76. Al-Rostamani holds a particularly significant position as she is the only female chief executive of a publicly listed corporation in the United Arab Emirates. Her leadership extends beyond her role at First Abu Dhabi Bank, as she also serves on the boards of influential organizations, including the Institute of International Finance and the US-UAE Business Council, demonstrating her broad engagement in global financial and trade relations.

Also recognized is Shaikha Al-Bahar, Deputy Group CEO at the National Bank of Kuwait, ranked at No. 92. Al-Bahar stands out within her organization as the only woman on NBK’s executive management team. Her influence is further highlighted by her chairing positions for crucial international branches of the bank, namely NBK France and NBK Egypt, indicating her vital role in the bank’s international strategy and operations.

Broader Trends in Female Leadership

The release of the 2025 list provides a moment to reflect on the overall progress of women in the highest echelons of the corporate world. According to Alyson Shontell, editor-in-chief of Fortune, the percentage of Fortune 500 companies now run by women has reached 11%. This figure represents the highest percentage recorded to date, signaling a gradual but significant shift in the landscape of corporate leadership.

While 11% still represents a minority of top corporate roles, achieving the highest recorded percentage underscores consistent progress over time. The presence of 100 women on Fortune’s Most Powerful Women list, drawing from a broad range of industries and geographies, further illustrates the depth of talent and influence that female leaders wield in the global economy.

The Significance of Recognition

The annual Fortune list and related events like the Riyadh conference play a crucial role in elevating the visibility of female leaders. By highlighting the achievements and positions of power held by these 100 women, Fortune aims to inspire future generations and demonstrate the tangible impact that women are having in traditionally male-dominated fields.

The inclusion of leaders from diverse sectors like technology and energy, alongside finance and retail, indicates that women are breaking barriers across the entire economic spectrum. The international representation, with nearly half the list comprising non-US executives, reinforces the global nature of this trend towards greater inclusion and leadership diversity.

In conclusion, Fortune’s 2025 list of the 100 Most Powerful Women in Business not only celebrates the individual accomplishments of these influential figures but also serves as a barometer for the slow but steady progress being made in achieving gender parity in corporate leadership worldwide. The list, coupled with initiatives like the inaugural Riyadh conference, continues to shine a spotlight on the women shaping the future of global business.
