Singapore Election 2025: Ruling PAP Secures Landslide Victory Under PM Lawrence Wong

Singapore’s ruling People’s Action Party (PAP) has secured a decisive landslide victory in the 2025 General Election (GE2025), a result that marks a significant moment as the first nationwide electoral test for Prime Minister Lawrence Wong since assuming the leadership of the party. The comprehensive nature of the win provides a powerful mandate for the new leadership team and signals a strong public affirmation of continuity and stability in the city-state’s political direction during this period of transition.

Election Outcome Confirms PAP Dominance

Following polling day on May 3rd, which saw voting operations extend from 8 am well into the early hours, concluding at approximately 2 am the following morning, the scale of the PAP’s success became evident. The party secured an overwhelming majority, winning 87 out of the 97 contested seats in parliament. This robust performance translated into a formidable national vote share of 65.57 per cent for the ruling party. This figure represents a notable 4 percentage point improvement compared to the party’s performance in the previous general election held in 2020, indicating a significant upswing in public support across the electorate. The outcome reinforces the PAP’s long-standing dominance in Singaporean politics, extending its uninterrupted rule.

The People’s Action Party successfully navigated the electoral landscape, securing victories in all constituencies identified as key battlegrounds or closely watched contests. These strategic wins underscored the party’s ability to connect with voters across various demographic and geographic areas. Among the significant individual results, the single-seat ward of Jalan Kayu saw the prominent labour chief, Ng Chee Meng, return to parliament after contesting the seat. In the multi-member Group Representation Constituencies (GRCs), the PAP was victorious in crucial areas such as Punggol GRC, a team led by Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong, and the expansive West Coast-Jurong West GRC. These victories in contested areas are often seen as indicators of the broader political mood and the effectiveness of the ruling party’s campaign efforts.

While facing the full force of the PAP’s electoral machinery, the main opposition Workers’ Party (WP) managed to hold onto its established footholds, preventing a complete sweep by the ruling party. The WP successfully defended its seats in the Group Representation Constituencies of Aljunied and Sengkang, as well as the single-member ward of Hougang SMC. Collectively, these results mean the Workers’ Party will have 10 elected Members of Parliament in the upcoming term. Furthermore, under Singapore’s political system aimed at ensuring a minimum level of opposition presence, the WP will also be offered two Non-constituency MP (NCMP) seats, which would bring their total parliamentary representation to 12 seats, allowing them a platform to voice alternative perspectives and scrutinise government policy. Beyond the PAP and the WP, nine other opposition parties also contested the election across various constituencies; however, none of these parties succeeded in securing any seats in parliament.

Analysis: A Resounding Mandate for 4G Leadership

Political analysts and observers were quick to interpret the results, widely characterising the outcome as a strong endorsement of the ruling party and, crucially, the new leadership team headed by Prime Minister Wong. Eugene Tan, a law don at Singapore Management University, offered a pointed assessment, describing the victory as a “resounding victory and an authoritative mandate” for the People’s Action Party. Professor Tan highlighted the significance of the result in the context of the ongoing political succession, stating that the election results clearly indicate the “completion of the transition to the 4G leadership.” This perspective suggests that the electorate has given its explicit approval for the transfer of power to the new generation of leaders within the PAP.

Prime Minister Wong himself reflected on the results, interpreting the public’s decision as a clear expression of confidence in his nascent administration. He stated that the outcome represents a “clear signal of trust, stability and confidence” in his government’s ability to steer Singapore through upcoming challenges and deliver on its promises. The improved vote share, a key metric often scrutinised for shifts in public sentiment, reinforces this narrative, providing the PAP with bolstered legitimacy as it embarks on its new term. The election effectively solidifies Prime Minister Wong’s position as the nation’s leader with a fresh and strong mandate from the populace.

Implications and the Road Ahead

The landslide victory grants the PAP government under Prime Minister Lawrence Wong considerable political capital and stability. With such a dominant presence in parliament, the administration is well-positioned to pursue its policy agenda with minimal legislative hurdles. The election outcome underscores the continuity of Singapore’s unique political model, where a dominant ruling party maintains significant public support, particularly during periods perceived to require experienced and steady leadership.

The strong mandate received in GE2025 empowers the government to address key national priorities, ranging from economic restructuring and social policies to navigating complex geopolitical dynamics. The results confirm the successful execution of the leadership transition strategy put in place by the PAP, validating their approach to succession planning through a direct public vote. As the new parliamentary term commences, the focus will shift to how the PAP government leverages this authoritative mandate to implement its vision and respond to the evolving needs and aspirations of the Singaporean people. The election has undeniably set the stage for the next chapter in Singapore’s political journey, firmly placing Prime Minister Lawrence Wong at the helm with a fresh, powerful mandate.
