Trump’s Power Plays: US Democracy Under Scrutiny as Executive Authority Expands

In the initial six weeks following his return to office, President Donald Trump has embarked on a series of significant actions that observers have characterized as a “dizzying teardown of the federal government and attacks on long-standing institutions.” These moves appear aimed at fundamentally increasing the scope of presidential authority and solidifying control over key governmental functions.

Asserting Executive Authority: Key Actions

During this critical early period, President Trump undertook several consequential steps. Among the most notable was the pardoning of individuals involved in the U.S. Capitol attack, an event intrinsically linked to efforts to overturn his 2020 election loss. This action, along with others, signaled a willingness to exert executive clemency in politically charged circumstances.

Simultaneously, the administration focused on personnel changes within critical federal bodies. Reports indicate a concerted effort to appoint loyalists to lead key institutions, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and various branches of the military. This strategic placement of allies is seen by some as a means of ensuring adherence to the administration’s agenda across the executive landscape.

A significant target of this reorganization has been the Department of Justice. The early weeks saw what has been described as a purging of the department, leading directly to the dropping of investigations against individuals allied with the president. Such interventions into the judicial process have fueled concerns about the independence of law enforcement and the pursuit of justice.

Targeting Independent Institutions and Freedoms

Beyond the executive branch, President Trump has reportedly asserted control over agencies designed to operate with independence. Concerns were raised, for instance, by reported declarations of control over independent bodies such as the Federal Election Commission (FEC). Such moves challenge the traditional separation and autonomy intended for these regulatory bodies.

The administration has also reportedly engaged in actions perceived as penalizing media outlets for coverage deemed unfavorable. Coupled with suggestions from presidential allies that the administration might defy court orders, these developments collectively paint a picture of an executive branch testing the traditional boundaries of its power relative to other branches of government and the free press.

Expert Perspectives and Growing Concerns

The cumulative effect of these actions has not gone unnoticed on the global stage. Global democracy monitors have voiced concerns regarding the potential endangerment of American democracy, adding the United States to a list of nations whose democratic health warrants close observation.

Domestically, prominent academics and experts have also sounded alarms. Brendan Nyhan of Dartmouth College, a leading political scientist, is among over 800 political scientists who signed a public letter. This letter specifically warned that the president’s actions were actively undermining the rule of law and the system of checks and balances fundamental to the U.S. constitutional framework.

Nyhan, offering his assessment, stated that President Trump was employing the “classic elected authoritarian playbook.” This characterization suggests that the president’s methods mirror those used by leaders in other nations who have consolidated power at the expense of democratic norms and institutions.

Public Response and Ongoing Debate

The actions and the resulting debate over the limits of presidential power have resonated with segments of the public. A “No Kings Day” protest was notably scheduled for Presidents Day, February 17, 2025, in Washington. This event was organized with the dual purpose of supporting federal workers and opposing actions attributed to both President Trump and entrepreneur Elon Musk, highlighting the breadth of public concerns.

The first six weeks of this administration have thrust the fundamental nature of American governance and the resilience of its democratic institutions to the forefront of national and international discourse. The pace and scope of the president’s actions have created a period of intense scrutiny, prompting ongoing discussions about executive power, institutional independence, and the future trajectory of U.S. democracy.
