Suspect Charged in Targeted Attacks on Minnesota Lawmakers Hortman and Hoffman After State’s Largest Manhunt

Green Isle, Minnesota – Federal authorities have charged a Minnesota man in connection with the shocking and brutal targeted attacks on two prominent state lawmakers and their spouses that triggered the largest manhunt in Minnesota’s history. Vance Boelter, 57, of Green Isle, Minnesota, faces charges via federal complaint, including stalking and murdering Minnesota House of Representatives Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman and her husband, and stalking and shooting Minnesota State Senator John Hoffman and his wife Yvette Hoffman.

The charges stem from events in the early morning hours of June 14, 2025, when Boelter allegedly carried out a calculated plan to inflict violence upon Minnesota elected officials and their families. According to court documents, Boelter meticulously equipped himself for the assault, donning body armor and arming himself with firearms. In a chilling detail, he allegedly disguised himself as a law enforcement officer, a tactic seemingly designed to gain access and sow confusion.

Details of the Alleged Attack

Investigators assert that Boelter’s initial target on June 14, 2025, was the home of Minnesota State Senator John Hoffman and his wife Yvette Hoffman. The suspect allegedly went to their residence disguised as an officer. When the Hoffmans opened their door, Boelter allegedly opened fire, shooting both Senator and Mrs. Hoffman. The severity of their injuries was not detailed in the initial charges, but the act itself marked the beginning of a day of terror that would ripple across the state.

Authorities stated that the suspect had compiled a list of possible targets, indicating the attacks were not random acts of violence but part of a broader, politically motivated plan. This list underscores the deliberate nature of the alleged crimes and the potential threat to other public figures.

Following the initial shootings and the discovery of the broader threat, federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies launched an immediate and extensive search for Boelter. This collaborative effort involved numerous police departments, sheriff’s offices, and federal agencies, including the FBI. The scale and intensity of the search quickly grew, eventually being described by authorities as the largest manhunt in Minnesota’s history. The multi-jurisdictional coordination was critical in tracking the suspect and ultimately leading to his apprehension.

The investigation into the motive behind the attacks is ongoing, but officials have been clear in their preliminary assessment of the nature of the crime.

Official Condemnation

The attacks drew swift and strong condemnation from officials at the highest levels of law enforcement. Attorney General Pamela Bondi described the acts as “horrific, targeted murders” and unequivocally labeled the violence an “attack on democracy.” Her statement highlighted the gravity of targeting elected officials and the democratic process they represent.

FBI Director Kash Patel released a statement underscoring the federal government’s commitment to addressing such violence. He stated that the FBI “stands united” with its law enforcement partners, vowing to “hold accountable anyone who commits such acts,” signaling the seriousness with which federal authorities view attacks on public servants.

Acting U.S. Attorney Joe Thompson for the District of Minnesota offered a stark assessment of the events, describing them as “targeted political assassinations the likes of which have never been seen in Minnesota.” This characterization emphasizes the unprecedented nature of the crime within the state’s history and its political dimensions.

Special Agent in Charge Alvin M. Winston Sr. of the FBI Minneapolis Field Office provided a critical detail about the execution of the attack, noting that the gunman, by “impersonating a police officer,” deliberately “lured public servants to their doorstep,” highlighting the deceptive and premeditated nature of the alleged violence.

The Charges Filed

The federal complaint against Vance Boelter details the specific allegations he now faces. These include charges of stalking and murdering Minnesota House of Representatives Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman and her husband. Separately, he is charged with stalking and shooting Minnesota State Senator John Hoffman and his wife Yvette Hoffman. The legal process following a federal complaint involves presenting the case to a grand jury for potential indictment.

The charging document outlines the prosecution’s initial view of the events of June 14, 2025, portraying a meticulously planned act of violence aimed at disrupting the political landscape through terror. The differentiation in charges – murder versus shooting – likely reflects the specific outcomes for each victim, as alleged by the prosecution based on evidence gathered during the immediate aftermath and the subsequent manhunt.

The apprehension of Boelter concludes the physical search but marks only the beginning of a potentially lengthy and complex legal battle. The case is expected to draw significant national attention given the nature of the targets and the unprecedented characterization by law enforcement officials. The community in Minnesota and beyond is grappling with the reality of such a direct and violent assault on its elected representatives and the fundamental principles of democracy.
