American actor Eric Dane has died. He passed away on Thursday, February 19, 2026. He was 53 years old. His representatives confirmed his death. They stated that Dane died from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). ALS is also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. This occurred less than a year after he announced his diagnosis. Dane’s family shared a heartfelt statement. They said he spent his final days surrounded by loved ones. His devoted wife and two daughters were by his side. They were the center of his world. The family requested privacy. They are navigating this difficult time. The entertainment world mourns his loss. Dane was a celebrated actor. He was best known for his roles on “Grey’s Anatomy.” He also starred in “Euphoria.” His career spanned many years. He played Dr. Mark Sloan on “Grey’s Anatomy.” His character was famously nicknamed “McSteamy.” This role brought him widespread recognition. He played the part from 2006 to 2012. He later reprised the role in 2021. Furthermore, Dane portrayed Cal Jacobs. This was in HBO’s drama “Euphoria.” He appeared in this role until his death. The actor also had a role in “The Last Ship.” His career began with earlier TV appearances. These included shows like “Saved by the Bell.” He also had roles in “Married… With Children” and “Charmed.” His big break came in the mid-2000s. This was with “Grey’s Anatomy.”

A Courageous Battle with ALS

Dane’s journey with ALS was marked by courage. He first began experiencing symptoms in late 2023. These included weakness in his right hand. He saw a physician about the issue. Nine months later, he received his official diagnosis. Dane went public with his ALS diagnosis in April 2025. He spoke about his health in an interview. He appeared on “Good Morning America” in June 2025. He told Diane Sawyer he initially dismissed the symptoms. He thought he might be texting too much. However, the weakness worsened. He then saw specialists. The diagnosis came as a shock. ALS is a progressive neurodegenerative disease. It attacks motor neurons. These neurons control muscles. The disease leads to muscle weakness. It can cause paralysis. There is currently no cure for ALS. Life expectancy varies. However, the average is about three years from diagnosis.

A Passionate Advocate for ALS Awareness

In his final year, Eric Dane became a fervent advocate. He dedicated himself to raising ALS awareness. He spoke at a news conference in Washington. This was in June 2025. He discussed health insurance prior authorization. He stated his purpose clearly. “I am here today to speak briefly as a patient battling ALS,” he said. Dane partnered with advocacy groups. He joined I AM ALS. This is a community-led ALS advocacy movement. Together, they launched the “Push for Progress” campaign. This aimed to accelerate ALS research. It also sought to expand treatment access. Furthermore, the campaign pushed for federal funding. Dane also joined the Board of Directors for Target ALS. He expressed his commitment. “This disease takes something from me every day. But I won’t let it take my spirit,” he stated. He wanted to contribute to finding effective treatments. The ALS Network honored his efforts. They named him Advocate of the Year. This was in September 2025. He was also recognized for his commitment. He supported people living with ALS.

A Life in Moments: Memoir to be Published

Dane’s life was full of significant moments. He channeled his experiences into a memoir. It is titled “Book of Days: A Memoir in Moments.” The book is scheduled for publication in 2026. Maria Shriver’s imprint, The Open Field, will release it. The memoir reflects on key life events. These include his daughters’ births. It covers his first day on “Grey’s Anatomy.” It also details his decision to get sober. The day he received his ALS diagnosis is included. Dane wanted to share his journey. He sought to inspire others. “I want to capture the moments that shaped me,” he said. He aimed to show what it means to live with heart. He hoped his story would help others find meaning. He was honored to have his story published.

Legacy and Remembrance

Eric Dane’s impact extends beyond his acting roles. He faced his ALS diagnosis head-on. He used his platform to fight for others. His advocacy work was significant. He inspired many with his resilience. Tributes have poured in from co-stars. “Euphoria” creator Sam Levinson expressed his heartbreak. He called working with Dane an honor. Alyssa Milano recalled his humor. She noted his deep love for his daughters. His memory will live on. He is survived by his wife, Rebecca Gayheart. He is also survived by his daughters, Billie and Georgia. His legacy includes his memorable performances. It also includes his courageous fight against ALS. He will be deeply missed.
