Trump Claims Israel-Iran Ceasefire in Effect Amid Conflicting Reports, Escalating Violence

US President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, that a ceasefire between Israel and Iran had taken effect, calling on both nations to uphold the agreement and prevent further hostilities. The declaration from the White House arrived amidst a backdrop of intense recent exchanges and conflicting accounts from the involved parties regarding the status of any formal truce.

Escalation Precedes Ceasefire Claim

The announcement followed a period of significant escalation. Iran recently launched multiple volleys of missiles towards Israel, one of which struck the southern Israeli city of Beersheba. These attacks resulted in confirmed casualties, with emergency services (Magen David services) in Israel reporting four deaths, two moderate injuries, and 20 light injuries from the Beersheba missile strike alone. Israeli sources have reported a total of at least 24 deaths in Israel resulting from Iranian strikes during the recent flare-up.

According to Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, there was no formal ceasefire agreement specifically with Israel. However, Araghchi stated that Tehran would halt its attacks if Israel ceased what he termed its “illegal aggression” by a specific deadline: 4 am local time on June 24, corresponding to 00:30 GMT. Israel has maintained public silence on the matter, offering no comment on the reported ceasefire agreement or Iran’s conditions.

Adding another dimension to the regional tensions, Iran also targeted Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar, which houses American troops, with missiles on the evening of Monday, June 23. This action was framed by Iran as retaliation for US attacks on Iranian nuclear sites that occurred a day earlier, on Sunday, June 22.

Heavy Casualty Toll Reported

The human cost of the recent conflict has been significant, according to reports from Iran. Iranian sources claim that more than 400 people, including 13 children, have been killed since Israel reportedly began its attack on June 13. They also state that over 3,056 people have been wounded during this period.

Despite the claim of a ceasefire being in effect as of June 24, military actions continued in parallel. The Israeli military stated that its fighter jets conducted strikes against missile launchers located in western Iran on June 24, underscoring the volatile and complex nature of the situation on the ground, even as diplomatic statements about de-escalation were being made.

Uncertainty Lingers Over Fragile Situation

The disparity between President Trump’s definitive declaration, Iran’s conditional statement denying a formal truce, and Israel’s lack of public confirmation highlights the precariousness of the current situation. The continuation of military strikes by Israel against Iranian targets on the same day the ceasefire was announced by the U.S. president further complicates the picture, leaving the region’s immediate future uncertain as international observers hope for a genuine cessation of hostilities to prevent further loss of life and regional destabilization.
