Authors Guild Decries Trump Administration’s Alleged Interference in Arts and Free Expression

New York, NY – The Authors Guild, the nation’s oldest and largest professional organization for writers, has issued a forceful statement condemning the alleged actions of the Trump administration regarding artistic and literary expression, characterizing them as fundamentally “anti-American and anti-democratic.”

The organization’s critique centers on accusations that the administration sought to exert undue control over programming at prominent cultural institutions and systematically undermine federal agencies dedicated to supporting the arts and humanities.

Allegations of Programmatic Interference

According to the Authors Guild, the Trump administration allegedly attempted to dictate programming at venerated institutions such as the Kennedy Center and the Smithsonian Institution. These efforts reportedly included prohibiting programs deemed related to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) and mandating that content and initiatives align with the views of the then-current administration.

The Guild asserts that such directives represent a significant overreach and a departure from the principle of artistic freedom and institutional independence.

Targeting Cultural Agencies

A core element of the Authors Guild’s concern is the alleged effort by the Trump administration to dismantle federal cultural agencies. The organization claims the administration reportedly sought to dismantle the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) and the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). Furthermore, the statement highlights that the Institute for Museum and Library Services (IMLS) was largely dismantled during this period.

The NEA and NEH were established by Congress in 1965 with the explicit mission to foster wisdom, vision, and access to arts and humanities across the United States. The Authors Guild emphasizes the vital role these agencies play in supporting cultural endeavors nationwide.

The Prohibition of Specific Terms

Adding to the allegations of control, the Authors Guild states that agencies were reportedly instructed to ban the use of certain words and terms in their communications and programs. The list of allegedly prohibited terms included “diversity,” “equity,” “environmental justice,” “gender,” “gay,” “women,” and “advocacy.”

The organization views the prohibition of such language as an attempt to suppress important societal conversations and erase recognition of various communities and issues from public discourse sponsored by federal entities.

Economic Significance of the Creative Sector

In its statement, the Authors Guild underscores the significant economic contributions of the creative sector, which encompasses literary and artistic professions. The organization cites data indicating that the U.S. creative sector contributed over $2 trillion to the U.S. Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 2023 and employed 11.6 million workers during the same year.

The Guild argues that efforts to stifle artistic and literary expression or dismantle the agencies that support them not only harm cultural vitality but also pose a threat to a substantial and growing segment of the national economy.

A Call to Action

Responding to these alleged actions, the Authors Guild is urging citizens to take action to defend artistic freedom and support cultural institutions. The organization’s call to action includes contacting Congressional representatives to voice concerns, writing op-eds to raise public awareness, and supporting arts and humanities organizations financially and actively.

Furthermore, the Guild indicates that individuals may consider joining a potential lawsuit to challenge the legality and constitutionality of these alleged interferences with artistic and literary expression.

The Authors Guild’s statement serves as a significant warning from a major professional body within the creative community, highlighting concerns about the intersection of government policy, cultural expression, and democratic values.
