Trump Defends Record in State of the Union Amidst Tariff Turmoil and Political Division

President Donald Trump delivered his State of the Union address Tuesday, February 24, 2026. He touted significant accomplishments. Trump claimed he inherited a “ruined country.” He stated his administration “fixed it.” The President proclaimed a “transformation like no one has ever seen before.” The nation, he said, is “back—bigger, better, richer and stronger than ever before.” He declared it a “golden age of America.”

Economic Claims and Inflation Data

Trump highlighted the economy. He claimed “inflation is plummeting.” His administration “driven core inflation to the lowest level in more than five years.” Inflation was down to 1.7% in late 2025. The annual inflation rate slowed to 2.4% in January 2026. This marked its lowest level since May 2025. Real average weekly earnings also saw an increase. However, GDP growth slowed to 1.4% in late 2025.

The President emphasized border security. He called it the “strongest border in American history.” Trump asserted “zero” undocumented immigrants entered the US recently. Crime rates showed a significant decline. The murder rate fell 21% in 2025 compared to 2024. This brought it to historic lows. Violent crime dropped sharply across American cities. Some cities saw murder rates fall 40% or more.

Supreme Court Strikes Down Tariffs

The speech occurred amidst tariff controversy. The Supreme Court ruled February 20, 2026. It struck down tariffs imposed under the IEEPA. The Court stated Congress holds taxing power. It found IEEPA does not grant tariff authority to the president. This decision invalidated many existing import taxes.

New Tariff Imposition

Hours after the ruling, Trump announced new tariffs. He invoked Section 122 of the Trade Act of 1974. Initially, a 10% tariff was announced. Then, Trump raised the rate to 15%. These new tariffs are temporary, limited to 150 days. Certain goods, like USMCA products, remain exempt.

International and Business Reactions

This tariff move drew global attention. The European Commission sought clarity. France will analyze the consequences of the new trade penalties. Japan called the situation “a real mess.” South Korean officials stated they would review trade deals. U.S. businesses demanded refunds for tariffs already collected. They also expressed concern over the new levies.

Democratic Boycott and Counterprogramming

Dozens of Democratic lawmakers boycotted the address. They held “People’s State of the Union” events. Lawmakers cited opposition to Trump’s policies and rhetoric. They argued the times are “not normal.” House Speaker Mike Johnson criticized the boycotts.

Foreign Policy: Focus on Iran

Trump addressed international tensions. He spoke about Iran. The President stated a preference for diplomacy. However, he vowed to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons. Trump accused Iran of developing missiles. These missiles could threaten the United States. The US military presence in the Middle East increased.

A Nation Divided

Trump’s speech came amid deep political divisions. His approval ratings remain low. The address highlighted his administration’s agenda. It also set the stage for upcoming midterm elections. The State of the Union reflected ongoing political news. He defended his “America First” policies. The American public remains divided on the nation’s direction.
