The ALERRT program, established in 2002 by Texas State University in collaboration with law enforcement agencies, has become a cornerstone of active shooter response preparedness nationwide. Recognized by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in 2013 as the National Standard in Active Shooter Response Training, ALERRT’s mission is to provide research-based, cutting-edge training designed to save lives and protect communities. The program has successfully trained over 300,000 first responders across the country, often at no cost to participating agencies, leveraging federal and state funding.

ALERRT Level 1: Skills for Immediate Crisis Intervention

The ALERRT Active Shooter Response Level 1 course is a rigorous, 16-hour program designed to prepare sworn law enforcement officers for the immediate challenges posed by active threat incidents. This intensive, hands-on training focuses on equipping responders with the skills to swiftly isolate, distract, and neutralize an active shooter. Key modules include tactical movement, room entry techniques, team coordination, and breaching procedures. The course culminates in realistic force-on-force scenarios, allowing officers to practice and refine their decision-making and tactical execution in high-stress environments. The overarching goal is to instill a standard set of skills enabling responders to save the maximum number of lives by focusing on immediate threat mitigation.

Virginia’s Commitment to Enhanced Public Safety

The Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services is spearheading this training effort as part of a broader statewide initiative to standardize and elevate active attack response capabilities among its law enforcement and public safety personnel. By adopting national standard levels of training, Virginia aims to build greater resiliency and ensure continuity in its response mechanisms when faced with devastating events. This proactive approach is crucial for maintaining public trust and ensuring the safety of all residents.

The Growing Need for Specialized Training

Active shooter incidents continue to pose a significant threat across the United States. Recent FBI data indicates the persistent reality of these events, with 50 incidents reported in 2022 resulting in 313 casualties. These statistics underscore the critical importance of comprehensive and continuous training for law enforcement to effectively respond, manage dynamic situations, and minimize harm. The ALERRT training provides essential tactical skills, enhances decision-making under pressure, and prepares officers for complex scenarios they may encounter in schools, workplaces, and public spaces.

Mechanicsville Training Details

The upcoming ALERRT Active Shooter Response Level 1 training will take place at the Barrett Training Facility, located at 10 Barrett Center Road, Mechanicsville, VA 23116. The sessions are scheduled from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM on Tuesday, October 21, 2025, and Wednesday, October 22, 2025. The training is offered at no cost to eligible participants, with pre-registration being mandatory. Prerequisites typically include being a sworn law enforcement officer with an appropriate agency credential. Attendees are advised to bring duty gear, body armor, and appropriate clothing for force-on-force exercises. Head, eye, and throat protection will be provided.

This training represents a vital investment in the safety and security of Virginia communities. By providing law enforcement with advanced skills and standardized tactics, the DCJS and ALERRT program are working together to ensure a robust and effective response to the evolving challenges of crime and public safety threats.
