On Thursday, July 17, 2025, the National Urban League, a prominent civil rights organization in the United States, announced a “state of emergency.” This declaration addresses concerns related to antidiscrimination policies, personal freedoms, and Black economic progress.
Response to Policy Changes
The Urban League’s declaration is a direct response to actions taken by President Donald Trump. The League asserts that Trump’s policies have altered established civil rights practices and undermined federal agencies responsible for their enforcement. The Urban League has also voiced criticism of policies implemented by major corporations, universities, and law firms, as well as social media platforms such as Meta and X. These criticisms focus on the alleged dismantling of diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives and the purported censorship of Black activists. In response, the Trump administration has maintained that various policies enacted during both Democratic and Republican administrations are discriminatory and unconstitutional.
