Malnutrition Crisis Deepens: UN Reports 66,000 Gaza Children Severely Affected by Blockade

GENEVA – A stark warning from the United Nations on May 6, 2025, highlighted the escalating humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip, reporting that a staggering 66,000 Palestinian children are suffering from severe malnutrition. The U.N. agency for Palestinian refugees, UNRWA, attributed this critical situation directly to Israel’s total blockade on food and aid, which has reportedly been in effect for its ninth consecutive week, equivalent to over two months.

Blockade’s Devastating Impact on Daily Life

The prolonged and comprehensive denial of essential supplies has pushed hundreds of thousands of Palestinians to the brink of starvation. The lack of access to regular food sources has reportedly forced some residents to resort to consuming unconventional or spoiled items, including reports of people eating turtle meat, grass, or rotten foodstuffs. Compounding the crisis, large segments of the population are said to be surviving on just one meal every two or three days, according to the UNRWA report based on sources [6, 7].

The human toll of this desperation is vividly illustrated by the account of Montasira al-Kafarneh, a displaced mother in Gaza City. She described the arduous process of having to separate rice from bulgur and stones merely to find something edible for her family, underscoring the extreme lengths people are going to secure sustenance.

Escalation of Military Actions

The humanitarian crisis unfolds against a backdrop of ongoing military operations. On May 6th, the same day the UNRWA report was released, Israeli strikes in the Gaza Strip killed at least 11 Palestinians. These strikes reportedly hit areas including Khan Younis, Beit Lahia, and Gaza City [6]. This followed significant casualties the previous day, May 5th, when attacks resulted in the deaths of 54 Palestinians [6].

Political Rhetoric and Military Intent

The military actions coincide with statements from Israeli leadership regarding future operations. On May 6th, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu outlined plans for an intensified offensive in Gaza. He stated that the civilian population would be moved for their safety, with reports suggesting that this potential displacement could encompass the entire territory [4, 10].

Adding to the complex political landscape, Israel’s far-right Finance Minister, Bezalel Smotrich, made significant public remarks at a conference of Israeli settlers. Smotrich publicly declared his view that Israel should “conquer the Gaza Strip,” explicitly stating that the nation should not fear the term “occupation” and should take control of the area [4, 10]. A UK parliamentary statement later noted Smotrich’s comments, specifically mentioning his remarks about Gaza being “entirely destroyed” and suggesting its people should leave to “third countries” [10].

Hamas Position on Ceasefire Talks

Amidst the escalating violence and political posturing, senior Hamas official Osama Hamdan addressed the possibility of resuming ceasefire negotiations. In response to the ongoing Israeli assault, Hamdan stated that Hamas would not agree to resume talks unless Israel ceases its attacks and allows for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state [4]. This position highlights the significant political hurdles to achieving a cessation of hostilities.

Pursuit of Accountability at the ICC

Separately, efforts are underway to pursue accountability for alleged actions during the conflict. On May 3rd, the Hind Rajab Foundation filed a war crimes complaint with the International Criminal Court (ICC). The complaint seeks the arrest of Lieutenant Colonel Beni Aharon of the IDF’s 401st Armored Brigade, holding him responsible for the death of 5-year-old Hind Rajab and others in January 2024 [4]. This legal action underscores the calls for international investigation into specific incidents of the conflict.

Conclusion: A Multi-Layered Crisis

The situation in the Gaza Strip presents a dire, multi-layered crisis encompassing severe humanitarian deprivation, escalating military conflict, complex political maneuvering, and calls for international legal accountability. The UN’s warning about the widespread severe malnutrition among children serves as a stark indicator of the urgent need for unimpeded humanitarian access and a resolution to the underlying conflict.
