Israel Intercepts Gaza-Bound Aid Ship, Deports Activists Including Greta Thunberg Amid Blockade Tensions

JERUSALEM — The Israeli navy intercepted a Gaza-bound aid ship in international waters early Monday, June 9, 2025, apprehending a dozen activists aboard who sought to challenge the long-standing naval blockade of the Gaza Strip. Among those detained was prominent Swedish environmental activist Greta Thunberg.

The vessel, identified as the Madleen, was sailing towards the Palestinian enclave when Israeli forces boarded it. According to official statements from Israel, the interception occurred in accordance with international law regarding blockades.

The Incident at Sea

The interception of the Madleen unfolded in international waters, a detail highlighted by both the activists and Israeli authorities, albeit with differing interpretations of its legality in the context of the blockade. The Israeli navy has maintained a naval blockade on Gaza since 2007, citing security concerns and the need to prevent the flow of weapons to militant groups.

The twelve activists aboard the Madleen had explicitly stated their intention to break this blockade, asserting that it constitutes collective punishment and impedes the delivery of essential humanitarian aid to Gaza’s population. Their voyage was part of a series of attempts over the years by international solidarity movements to draw attention to and challenge the blockade.

Israeli naval commandos took control of the vessel and brought it to port in Ashdod, Israel. The twelve international activists aboard were then taken into custody.

Detention and Deportation

Following their detention, Israeli authorities processed the activists. While some passengers were subsequently deported, others faced formal arrest after refusing to cooperate with Israeli procedures.

Greta Thunberg, widely known for her climate activism, was among those who were deported. She has since departed Israel on a flight bound for France, according to sources close to the situation.

However, not all of the Madleen‘s passengers accepted voluntary deportation orders. Eight of the twelve international activists formally refused to sign these orders. As a result, these eight individuals were formally arrested by Israeli authorities.

Among those confirmed to be among the eight formally arrested is Rima Hassan, a French Palestinian member of the European Parliament. Her detention and subsequent arrest have drawn particular attention given her political status and profile.

The decision by these eight activists to refuse voluntary deportation signifies a potential desire to challenge their detention and the legality of Israel’s actions through legal channels within Israel or internationally.

International Reaction and Protests

The interception of the Madleen and the subsequent detention and deportation of the activists, particularly figures like Greta Thunberg and Rima Hassan, quickly garnered international attention.

In France, massive protests erupted on Monday in direct response to Israel’s raid of the Madleen. Demonstrators in several French cities voiced their condemnation of the interception and the blockade, calling for the release of the detained activists and an end to the restrictions on Gaza.

Rima Hassan’s arrest, as a French national and elected European official, is likely to further amplify the diplomatic and public response from France and potentially the wider European Union.

Context of the Blockade

The naval blockade of Gaza has been a contentious issue for years. Israel maintains that it is necessary to prevent weapons smuggling by groups like Hamas, which controls the territory. Critics argue that the blockade severely restricts the movement of people and goods, exacerbating a humanitarian crisis in Gaza and hindering reconstruction efforts.

Attempts to break the blockade by sea have occurred periodically, often leading to confrontations with the Israeli navy. The incident involving the Madleen is the latest such attempt, once again bringing the complex and often tense situation surrounding Gaza’s access to the outside world into the international spotlight.

The status of the remaining activists aboard the Madleen and the legal proceedings they may face in Israel remain subject to further developments.
