Trump Deploys National Guard as Los Angeles Protests Over Immigration Crackdown Turn Violent

Security forces and demonstrators have engaged in intense clashes across downtown Los Angeles as protests against the Trump administration’s recent immigration crackdown and raids escalated into confrontation.

The unrest prompted President Donald Trump to order the deployment of National Guard troops to the city, a move met with sharp criticism from local officials.

Escalating Clashes in Downtown LA

The confrontations occurred near key federal buildings, specifically the Edward R Roybal Federal Building and the Metropolitan Detention Centre, and significantly disrupted traffic flow on the nearby 101 Freeway.

These events mark the third consecutive day of widespread demonstrations following President Trump’s intensified immigration enforcement efforts, which have reportedly resulted in dozens of arrests of individuals, including undocumented migrants.

Security personnel on the ground employed a variety of dispersal methods, including flashbangs, rubber bullets, and tear gas, in efforts to control and scatter the crowds.

Protesters, in turn, were reported to have actively shut down the 101 Freeway, throwing various objects towards security forces and damaging vehicles. Objects reportedly hurled included fireworks, Molotov cocktails, and even a scooter.

Trump’s Response and Official Statements

Responding to the escalating situation, President Trump asserted that the deployment of the National Guard was a necessary measure to restore order.

The administration’s stance was echoed by FBI Director Kash Patel, who pledged to restore stability to the city. Patel described Los Angeles as being “under siege by marauding criminals,” framing the protests as fundamentally unlawful and violent.

Approximately 300 National Guard troops were subsequently deployed with the primary objective of guarding federal government buildings within the city.

President Trump characterized the protesters involved in the unrest as “paid insurrectionists,” a claim that opponents quickly dismissed.

Political Fallout and Legal Challenges

California Governor Gavin Newsom was among the most vocal critics of the President’s decision, describing the National Guard deployment as an overreaction. Governor Newsom argued that the move would likely escalate tensions further rather than quell them.

Highlighting the political divide, Governor Newsom also announced his intention to pursue legal action against the Trump administration. His planned lawsuit centers on the President’s deployment of the National Guard troops to California without prior consultation or approval from the state’s governor.

Arrests and Wider Context

The violence and confrontations in Los Angeles resulted in numerous arrests. Authorities confirmed that at least 27 people were taken into custody in the city during the period of unrest.

Similar violent clashes and arrests were also reported in San Francisco, indicating that the wave of protest and conflict extended beyond Los Angeles. At least 60 individuals were arrested in San Francisco in connection with related demonstrations.

The events in both cities underscore the heightened tensions across California and the nation following the Trump administration’s ongoing immigration enforcement actions and the controversial decision to involve military personnel in managing civilian protests.
