Alexandria, Virginia – A U.S. government employee working as an IT specialist for the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) has been arrested and charged with allegedly attempting to transmit national defense information to an officer or agent of a foreign government. Authorities announced the arrest of Nathan Vilas Laatsch, 28, of Alexandria, Virginia, detailing a federal investigation that led to his apprehension in northern Virginia.

According to court documents unsealed recently, the arrest of Laatsch, who is employed by the DIA and assigned to its Insider Threat Division, occurred on May 29, 2025, in northern Virginia. The charges stem from an alleged attempt to pass highly sensitive classified information.

Laatsch holds a Top Secret security clearance, granting him access to classified information vital to national security. His position within the Insider Threat Division, specifically tasked with detecting and mitigating risks from individuals within the agency, adds a significant layer to the allegations.

Investigation Initiated After Intelligence Tip

The investigation into Laatsch reportedly began in March 2025. Authorities received a tip alleging that Laatsch had offered to provide classified information to a friendly foreign government. This initial information prompted the involvement of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and initiated a covert operation.

Court documents outline details of the FBI’s operation. On or about May 1, 2025, FBI surveillance observed Laatsch depositing an item at a public park in northern Virginia. According to the documents, Laatsch believed this location was a prearranged dead drop site where the foreign government would retrieve the classified information he allegedly attempted to transmit.

The culmination of the operation occurred on May 29, 2025, when Laatsch was arrested in northern Virginia. The arrest took place upon the FBI’s receipt of documents he allegedly attempted to transmit as part of this endeavor.

The official announcement of the arrest was made on May 30, 2025.

Officials Announce Charges, Detail Agency Cooperation

The charges against Laatsch were announced by a consortium of high-ranking officials from the U.S. Department of Justice and intelligence community agencies, underscoring the gravity of the alleged national security breach attempt.

Those making the announcement included Sue J. Bai, Head of the Justice Department’s National Security Division; U.S. Attorney Erik S. Siebert for the Eastern District of Virginia; Assistant Director Roman Rozhavsky of the FBI’s Counterintelligence Division; and Executive Director Lee M. Russ of the Air Force Office of Special Investigations (OSI) Office of Special Projects.

The complex investigation is being led by the FBI Washington Field Office, with significant assistance provided by the U.S. Air Force OSI and the DIA itself.

Prosecution Led by National Security Experts

The prosecution of this sensitive case will be handled by experienced legal teams specializing in national security matters.

Trial Attorneys Christina Clark and Mark Murphy from the National Security Division’s Counterintelligence and Export Control Section are prosecuting the case. They are joined by Assistant U.S. Attorney Gordon Kromberg for the Eastern District of Virginia.

Laatsch’s initial court appearance is scheduled to take place in the Eastern District of Virginia, where the federal charges have been filed.

The alleged actions, involving an attempt by a cleared intelligence professional working within an insider threat mitigation unit to transmit national defense information to a foreign entity, highlight ongoing vigilance required to protect sensitive U.S. government secrets. The investigation remains ongoing.
